Windows Key?

I recently upgraded my PC's storage from no SSD to one. however, i forgot my windows product key and i also probably lost it because i'm a slob. I don't really want to buy a new product code, and that Activate Windows watermark is becoming an eyesore. Can anybody tell me Windows will send your old product key to you? thanks.

 

EDIT: I failed to mention that my PC is custom-built, so anything on my motherboard is not "tied" to my motherboard

should be tied to your motherboard, shouldn't need to do anything.

If its windows 10 you dont need it. Windows 7 you're probably screwed.

Windows 8 and up don't require anything, the key is stored in the UEFI for those, but yeah 7 and older if you lost the key you lost it

Is it connected to your MS account? How did you get the key?

my cousin gave me one to set up the PC, but he can't find it. Plus, i have 3 PCs linked to the MS account, but i dont know where i can find the code

It usually activates when you log in to account. It should also activate on same mobo without you doing anything (requires mobo to be newer than 2014/15-ish). Otherwise you are out of luck. You can get key from current system with free tools like Magical Jelly Bean, but for deeper recovery its only paid softwares.
