First build (mostly for gaming) and need thoughts/suggestions on where I can save money and where to invest money

Go to solution Solved by redsquirrel0249,

RAM is good, storage is good. 550w PSU should be fine. You can tell yourself that a 750w PSU is an upgrade path, but for the most part, GPUs and CPUs are only going to get more efficient. I would suggest a different balance of CPU and GPU. Imo, 1700X could use some more graphics power, but it all depends on what you're doing with it. I'm running a Ryzen 5 1600 with a 1070 and that's relatively balanced.

I'd recommend adding a SSD boot drive as well. @itisme911 Had a good point about usage of your M.2 port, so that's also an option if you're interested in some higher speed storage.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZRDPXP
CPU: AMD Ryzen 1700x 3.4 8-core processor

GPU: Asus - GeForce Gtx 1060 6GB Dual video card

Memory: G. Skill - Ripjaws V series 16GB (2x 8 GB) DDR-3200
Motherboard: ASRock - X370 Taichi ATX AM4
Storage: Seagate barracuda 2TB 3.5 7200 RPM internal
Power Supply: superNOVA G3 750 wat 80+ gold certified fully modular.
External Storage: Seagate back up plus 1TB

So that's it any suggestions are appreciated. Oh, and if it's not already apparent I'm not very savvy on computers.

this seems perfect to me.. you can save some money by going with a lower wattage power supply, because you don't need 750w, but if you want future proof when you wanna upgrade then that's fine, also you don't need such an expensive motherboard.

you can probably save 80-100$ by doing what i said, if that's worth it thats up to you.

you can also save an extra 70$ if you go with the 1600x, if you're only strictly gaming, because the 1700x won't benefit you in gaming alone. (it's better for multitasking while gaming)

cut down on your processor and get a 4 core, most games don't befit from more cores (garrys mod and minecraft are some exceptions)

if you are playing CPU intensive games that benefit from more cores, get the 6 core, or 8 if it's something like Universe Sandbox 2 in that case just ignore me...

use the money you saved on the processor and spend it more on your GPU, i got the cheapest 1070 and it runs a little hot (~80C (Celsius)) but i'm fine with that

Your motherboard supports m.2 I would look at getting a 256 gig ssd or a 500 whatever is best for your  budget and a 1tb hdd. And if you don't plan on doing any editing content creation etc I agree you could get a lower tier cpu and meybe go for more GPU power, though what resolution you're looking to play at should affect your decision..

When did you get your info?

Why does the R5 1600 wreck the i5 7600K to hell

Why did Intel replace a 4 core chip with a 6 core chip and have it better for gaming

Most games use 6-8+ threads. Unless all you play are old versions of Minecraft, it'll use more than 4 threads.

Though a 4 core 8 thread is plenty even for 4k gaming, the extra cores would be great if you need em but costly if you don't.

yet the minimum requirements of most modern games is dual core (quad on really recent ones) and the recommended requirements is quad core

if all you are doing is gaming (and productivity) then a 4 core is great for what you want, if you want to video edit or do 3d modeling/rendering then 6-8 is better

I went for 4c 8thread when it was looking great and still works great even for editing the cores arent NECESSARY unless they are, listen to Salv8

Have you tried a 8 core? It works much better for those tasks, and in many games.

4k has been limited to 60hz till recently and I played 4k max at 80's frames with 2 1080's and I suck at editing so faster cpu means nothing at this point but I rarely notice lag on my rig

The stock cooler is better than that cooler. Get a better 1070 with more fans instead.
