Blue Screen of Death.

Abdullah Arif

So i accidentally downloaded some malware ( well not accidentally i was actually trying to get nord vpn for free:ph34r:). My Chrome got stuck and started crashing. I downloaded malware bytes and removed all the malware but the system kept hitting blue screen. It got a bit stabalized and Far Cry 5 ran okay but now when i try and launch Fortnite it says restart client error code 0. I tried all types of fixes cmd one verified my files and everything but it wouldn't start. The message is displayed after matchmaking. And sometimes the blue screen still appears. Any way i can fix this? Dont wanna install windows because too much data on c drive would be lost.

Try AVG or Bitdefender, as much as I like the Malwarebytes antimalware software, it has a detection rate of less tan 60% meanwhile these other free-ish programs have a detection rate of 80-95%

Also kill the browser, it has almost certainly been compromised.

...that is not good, if it were ransomware you would probably already had all of your file encrypted, which means that it is probably an attempt to steal financial info, all of your secure data has probably been compromised, I would reset all passwords stored on the computer, contact any credit cards that you have, and freeze any debit cards you have on from there, and just secure all your data. Your browser by now has probably been hijacked, disconnect the computer from the internet, and use a different device for all aforementioned steps.

Trust me, most ransomware doesnt try to steal data. It encrypts it, and leaves. It doesnt try to send more info to their servers than needed.

I wouldnt bother trying to fix the system though, a full system reset is easy enough these days.

Well that's good, then it would probably would be easier to just start from scratch and reinstall windows, and re download all those games.

Yes I know I just dismissed that, if it were ransomware it would have been encrypted and nearly unusable a half an hour to 45 minutes ago.

I would. It'll likely take between 1-3 hours and you'll be sure its gone.

Ive seen malware create backdoors into systems, only to not remove it and get re-encrypted in 2 weeks.

Some ransomeware only targets non-OS files, leaves browsers, the OS and other programs working but will encrypt any database/photo/video files.

Installing windows might fix it then?

Just reinstall windows. Its simple to do, and the BSOD will go away.

Yes that is probably the easiest solution, though it isn't the end all be all clever hackers have bypassed that before.

If you need a vpn, use hotspot vpn. I use it at school and it works wonderfully. Minimal to no ads sometimes.

Yeah not a good idea, this is the kind of stuff you can expect from that, unless you do yourself from scratch, which is theft, therefore don't do it.

Totally, that is cybersecurity for you, and with major vulnerabilities such as Meltdown and Spectre in nearly every internet connected device known to man things get scary.
