I plan on rebuilding a new gaming PC, I intend to use a i7-7700k with a GTX 1060 and 16gb ddr4 ram, the usual. I really want a completely modular power supply but have no idea on what wattage I need, I do NOT plan on overclocking the CPU. Can someone please give me some advice?

Do you already have the CPU? If not, don't.

What's available?

The cheapest thing would probably be Bitfenix Formula, be quiet Pure Power, though the Bitfenix is better.

Fully modulair huh? The corsair rm550x should be fine. Maybe the rm650x or rm750x for future upgrades?

Why?!

For a System that doesn't even consume 300W....

300 W? Well the rmx series are REALLY good and dont go lower than 550 watt. And it is always good to have alittle more wattage. Dont cheap on wattage or psus. Never. I mean what if he like puts a sli 1070 in the future in hes pc. He doesnt need to switch from psu than.

Nonono dont get just the cheapest thing. Cheaping on a PSU is the worst thing you can do.

Why not go lower than 550W? With 450W he can run an HEDT 1080 Ti system and still have room left over. And do keep in mind that PSUs from any decent brand are rated to run at full power at their max rated temperature 24/7 for the entirety of their warranty.

Going for 1070s in SLI doesn't make sense. Neither does recommending based on that scenario. Why don't you recommend an AX1600i in case he decides to go LN2 overclocking with an 7980XE and a Titan V?

The power use goes down with newer gens, not up.

He's recommending the cheapest good PSUs. As you could see by the models he was recommending.

Yeah, at most, with Prime Running, bit of overclock and the Donut rendering in the Background, maybe.

With normal Gaming (60Hz and VSYNC ON) probably more like 200-250W.

Yeah, that's why that's the normal recommendation.

But Alternatives:
Cougar GX-F

Bitfenix Whisper M

He doesn't if he switches to a Threadripper and VEGA 64...

And the Differences between 550W and 650W aren't that great usually.

Bit here and there...

Just look at those:

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-rm650x-psu,4611-3.html

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-rm550x-power-supply,4484-3.html

Secondary Side, no difference.

So the only Difference is in the PFC and Primary Switching stages.

And if you happen to live in a 230VAC Country, that doesn't matter one bit for you...

NO!

Its shit, only has 4 Cores, you can't put an 8k i7 in the same Board, so upgrading is impossible...

You should look in the direction of a Ryzen 2600(x) with an X470 Board.

With the 300 Series you need to Flash the BIOS somehow...

Whisper M does.

Be quiet Straight Power 11 also

For video editing, depending on the task, Intel Kaby and Coffee is faster. Look at Puget's testing in Adobe CC.

I wouldn't count on it that much...

https://www.heise.de/ct/artikel/Exclusive-Spectre-NG-Multiple-new-Intel-CPU-flaws-revealed-several-serious-4040648.html

and the Adobe CC Test I've seen are garbage -> DDR4-2400 for the one, the other had 2666....

And they were before the Spectre Patches! And only 1000 series...

So totally useless...

For video editing, I wouldn't bother even thinking about Intel right now because the Performance Impact of those Patches on high I/O Tasked Stuff is very high.

So I'd avoid Intel if possible..

The next thing is RAM, should be at least 16GB, the more the better. But with Ryzen don't forget the Memory! With DDR4-3200 you get something like 10-15% over DDR-2400...

And of course a good, big NVME SSD wouldn't be a bad idea either if you are handling big files either.

Newest Premiere updates heavily favor Intel and still have issues with crashing during rendering and playback on Ryzen. I wouldn't buy a Ryzen chip if using Premiere. Source: I have both the latest edition of Premiere Pro and a 1700X.

Also, new CC updates have acceleration for Quick Sync which makes an 8400 faster than an 1800X at any task in Premiere.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
