Laser sensor stopped working out of nowhere?

If the laser diode is dead, unless it is a very expensive mouse, just buying a new one is your best option unless you have all the equipment to do smd rework safely.

What happened is my mouse had suddenly stopped working and had made that windows sound that it makes when you plug/unplug something into a usb, however the buttons still worked but I just couldn't move it. Then I look underneath it and see no light coming out directly from underneath so I can assume something happened with the sensor but how come?! I already tried changing usb sockets, so somehow is the sensor busted... I mean is there anything I can really do?

I do have 2 mice and fortunately it was my cheap gaming mouse and not my more expensive mmo mouse. So i'm guessing its doomed now no point looking into seeing if i can resurrect it at all, it was so abrupt when it died.

In general, optical mice rely on comparing what it sees on the surface and how it moves, compared to a laser mouse which tends to go a little deeper into the mouse pad itself, hence it worked fine. If the surface is uniform, then it is difficult to track, so try finding something that has surface patterns.
