Personally from my experience, Bitdefender free with malwarebytes free is the ultimate combo.

Due to been light weight and not as many pop ups as AVG and Avast.

 

Also some user just use windows defender with malwarebytes another good performance (Fastest).

A better solution:

 

Run adblockers in your browser (uBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, Disconnect and decentraleyes) run as a limited user and you won't need AV software.

I don't like Avast, too bloatware and had too many misses in the past (big ones, where it disabled windows dll files or caused crashes or other issues)

 

I now use Avira Free Antivirus these days ... it doesn't use a lot of cpu in the background and the only annoyance is a small banner showing up in the bottom corner of the screen once a day, and it can be closed with a simple click.

I've been on Avira for years and it works great. Light weight and is tested to have one of the best detection rates there is.
