Computer boots to black screen, running out of ideas!

N_O_O_B_I_E

Hi, I am currently having the problem of my computer not being able to boot to desktop. The computer remains running but there is nothing displayed on the screen. My computer has been running fine all this time, and I incurred this problem suddenly when I went to twitch.tv. These are my pc specs:

Intel I7-4790k
Z97x Gigabyte Gaming 3
Msi Radeon R9 290x Lightning
Seasonic M12II Bronze 750W
Running on windows 10 64-bit

Things I've tried:

1. I am able to boot to safe mode through the displayport connection on my gpu. I've uninstalled my display drivers but the problem still persists. Somehow, uninstalling the drivers through device manager allows me to boot normally to the desktop for a few seconds before the screen goes blank again.

2. I am able to boot normally to desktop using the integrated graphics.

3. I've tried restoring my computer to an earlier time when my computer was working and it still doesn't work.

Would really appreciate if anyone has any advice on what to do as I've run out of ideas as to what could be the problem. Thanks!

@N_O_O_B_I_E Last time i encountered an issue like this the card had gone bad.

I did once watch a video on youtube once i think it was one of Jaytwocents videos where he had an issue with a friends card similar and flashed the onboard Video Cmos of the card to a later version which solved the issue.

Here is a clue to your issues.

If you can boot the system normally using the IGPU, then it seems to me your dedicated GFX card is bad, either the drivers are hopeless corrupt or the card is physically bad.

Take the card out, boot using the iGPU, clean out the GFX drivers, perhaps update the BIOS of your system, windows updates, etc., then shut it down cleanly, power it up again to desktop to ensure it's behaving itself.

Then shut it down again and re-attached the GFX card. If windows goes dumb at boot, then you know where the issue is

Thanks for the reply! I've done what you said, I took out my card and used the iGPU to clean the graphic card drivers completely. I do not think my GFX card is bad as I am able to boot to windows normally now using my GFX card. However, when I try to update the GFX card drivers my monitor goes blank again. How is it possible that the drivers are giving me problems now when the card was working on the new drivers before?

Hmmmm.....

I'll say it again.

Hmmmm.....

It's *possible* the power supply is failing, and when the GFX card draws more power (like under updates, or game playing) the power supply can't provide, and the screen goes blank.

It's also possible the card is trying to set a resolution higher than the monitor can provide (but that's a long shot idea...I doubt this is the case)

If you *don't* update the drivers, the computer plays nice with the video card, yes?

Are there proper GFX card drivers in Windows, or do you simply see the "Standard video display driver" under the hardware section?

In other words, if you don't update the drivers, what happens?

I do not think there is any proper GFX card drivers in windows as what I see on the device manager window is just "Microsoft basic display adapter". I am able to run games on it, but the refresh rate is limited to just 64hz when my monitor is able to do 144hz.

I've tried installing different versions of the card's drivers but I still face the same problem as the screen goes black during the installation and does not recover even after a period of time.

I've read online of other people with older generations of amd GFX cards who have the same problem with the display drivers but have yet to find a solution. Starting to think that I've run out of options and have to just get a new card...

Can you put the GFX card in a friend's PC and see what happens? That'll tell if it's good or bad
