Just be happy your card can do half a terabyte

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

so to get more info, I want you to run gpu-z and screenshot the first tab for the info, and "sensors" tab when you're running a game (easier if you have second screen, maybe windowed mode if you dont). this will tell me what drivers you have installed and what it thinks it's doing.

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

You can just paste screenshots in the post editor.

If it seems to think there's the full memory your card is supposed to have and the game is only using part of it, make sure it's all games and maybe...run occt gpu memtest?

ok so I just realized OCCt no longer has a gpu memtest tab, do this

GPU 3D

Check "Error Check

Check Memory Used and put an amount in there that you think would cover most of it , like a gig or two idk. If it's like a couple of other GPU memtests I used to use it may not support above 2 or 4 gigs but IT WILL spit in error in the case of the gpu being bad itself and probably will if you have a problem with vram even if youre not using all of it, though not guaranteed.

whelp there's your problem probably. Optimus is a pain in the fucking ass. Chances are you can't even disable it, as the way it works in most laptops these days is the framebuffer is run through the intel gpu either way. I have a couple of precisions I can disable it on, but that's a rare thing. And pretty much all laptops with nvidia gpus have this shit.

So, I'd start by reinstalling both the intel gpu drivers and the nvidia gpu drivers (in that order) and go from there. I'm going to sleep right now, so list your laptop model and other's may be able to help you. Probably not a hardware issue. If you can't get it working and others cant help I'll look at this tomorrow.

It automatically switches between the intel iGPU and the dedicated GPU to save battery. It's a good idea on like a workstation or media pc, but not really on a gaming PC where people expect to plug it in anyway. I've run into at least one game that was literally impossible to get it to recognize the NVIDIA gpu. I think sonic generations or something, idk wasn't me trying to play it.

Had any luck with drivers?

I went to bed last time and didnt have time. I will today. My laptop comes with this disk that is like a little hub and has the drivers.. Should I install those? Or the most recent off the nvidia website (the nvidia driver is like 368 or something so its kinda old) and i dont know what the intel ones are. Should I get the that arent for notebooks and just for pc's so maybe it cant use nvidia optimus?

Install the latest from the official websites. The intel ones first. Then the NVIDIA ones.

And the optimums is a hardware level thing. Drivers wont change it, the only thing that can is if it's built in a way to be switchable (rare)
