A recent HardwareUnboxed video made a brief comment about a rumor that Intel might ditch 8th gen support, but my Google-fu has failed me in finding anything about these rumors. Does anyone have more information about this?

Ugh, I doubt that. It's a good platform, aside from the other things.

There is a possibility that the current z370 chipset will only ever support the 8th gen... but it is far too soon to say any thing concretely.

Depends usually on power delivery, if the next generation requires a shit load of power to function, they'll design a new chipset and socket.

It's intel, it's pretty likely they'll either ditch z370 all together or throw out an 8700k with 100mhz higher clockspeed and 0.5% IPC improvement.

Glad I ditched my 8700k for the 2700X, screw intel

This is why Hardware Unboxed said it, to feed this reaction.

Intel has already given patch notes that prove Coffee Lake and Cannon Lake support the same socket, they're interchangeable. Which Hardware Unboxed said wouldn't happen, so rather than admit they're wrong, they throw out speculation.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

Youtube channel, used to be one of the best. But, they had to grow the channel so took advantage of AMD fans grouping the way they do to do it, rather than concentrating on their methodology. Really can't blame them. Throwing out insults to Intel is easier than making a quality video.

When they say socket do they mean the 1151?  It's been around since Skylake, but only works on Coffee and Cannon.(at least officially).  I think this is what has people speculating about Intel locking out 8th gen CPUs from Z390 (or whatever it ends up being called).

1151v2

You'll be able to swap a Coffee lake and Cannon Lake in the same board, as long as you do the usual bios updates. That's confirmed. Z370 isn't mentioned specifically, but assumed. Z390 is mentioned.

I don't think "ditching 8th gen support" was what he meant: older CPUs are still "supported" by Intel to this date. Probably it was more about motherboards that are compatible with 8th gen potentially not being compatible with 9th gen, which is to be seen. We just know that a Z390 chipset is in the making, but we don't know what will it support, and how many chipsets will support the upcoming CPUs. There may be some info out there, but at this point it is all rumor-level AFAIK.
