More like they had to... if they want to sell their new 980 series Lol.... if they increased their prices instead with their new 980s people would go with Sandisk/WD. The improvements done with the 980s weren't that much

They do. I just got 500GB MX500 for €120. I paid that much for 120GB 4-years back.

That sounds like more supply which means more VRAM which means cheaper GPUs???

  • due to a possible contender in the horizon? (Micron/Crucial had an attempt at NVMe M.2 using their Ballistix brand, but that didn't make it out of the design door. could they have gotten something?)

I assume it is because they've drip-dried the higher price points, and are only lowering the price as part of maximizing profits by stepping down to a lower price bracket to get consumers that would have otherwise wrote them off instantly.  Doing so is fine, but IMO they took too long and went too far with the premium.
