LGA775 with an old xeon or lga1150/1155/1156

I'm trying to build a cost effective pc and ran ito those boards all for under 50€ used, some come with cpus and memory. I already have ddr3 memory so I'm looking for cpus that support ddr3. RAM speed is not that important because I have a 1333 mhz stick and a 1600 mhz stick so the speed will bottleneck to 1333mhz.

socket 775 doesn't support DDR3 does it?

I would try to find a cheap i5/i7 computer on ebay, sometimes they go for less then a 100$

It can, just depends on motherboard.

Ow i see the newer socket 775 motherboards do have DDR3, anyhow I would still go with something newer, like the Intel i3/i5/i7 family or a AMD bulldozer

on 775 the memory controller was still in the PCH and not in the CPU. The Intel G4x chipsets support DDR3-800 and 1066 memory that way. 

 

And Bulldozer? Ew.....sandy bridge is MUCH faster.

775 + DDR3 will be a struggle.  Lots of RAM compatibility issues.

 

LGA 1155 + 2600k or E3-1270 is the sweet spot for price/performance right now it seems.

Bulldozer is terrible, don't buy in. If you're on an extremely limited budget 775 and a xeon should be good.

Dont go 775, honestly.  Its Bulldozer with slower clocks.  BD has almost exactly the same performance per clock but has higher clocks, a newer platform, and more cores.

That is relative though.. they out perform anything on socket 775, all be it with a bit more heat maybe..?

Anyhow if the price is equal i'd go with the "terrible" option

I wouldn't advise 775, it's getting pretty old and the IPC will be horrible. Look for either a newer i3 or an X58 mobo and Xeon, when overclocked a 6c/12t Xeon X5675 is just barely behind an R5 1600 (and I got my ASUS Rampage Mobo and CPU together for $120, cheaper than most new CPUs alone).

Couldn't agree more, socket 1366 would be great if you can find the motherboard for the cheap (The cpu's for this socket are cheaper then dirt! yet more then capable!)

Especially if you get a mobo with great VRMs, you can run a CPU at 1.4v and if it burns out just grab another one for $15-50 (for a 6 core, quads are like $12 for 4).

I would recommend a LGA 1155, its generally the most common and best priced. It has been a while since I've seen the market so I could be wrong, but the Older Xeons just won't keep up in modern day. The more modern you can get the better usually.
