(Troubleshooting) ASUS ROG Z370-I Second M.2 Drive Not Recognized

Hi Folks,

My first post here - hopefully someone can help me out! Thanks in advance :)

I have an ASUS ROG Z370-I (two m.2 ports) already perfectly running a Samsung 850 Evo m.2 drive in the primary slot, but purchased a second drive (Intel 600P Series 512gb) to expand storage.

It seems no matter what I do my MOBO wont recognize the new Intel drive in the second m.2 port. No recognition in UEFI BIOS or in Windows - cant initialize the drive. There doesn't even appear to be a second m.2 slot showing as "empty" in the BIOS - PCH Storage Configuration

What am I missing here? How do I get my board to recognize a second m.2 drive?

Keep in mind the following:

  • I HAVE tested the new Intel m.2 drive on another board and it works just fine.
  • I am running the latest BIOS version (0615)
  • I have not tested a different drive in the second slot (I would rather not swap my Samsung drive as this requires lots of disassembly)
  • I'll probably post something similar on the ASUS forum

Other thoughts:

  • Is this Intel drive somehow not compatible with my board? Fairly certain it is compatible...
  • Is there some kind of PCI-E setting I need to enable before a second m.2 drive will be recognized?
  • Other BIOS settings I am missing?

MOBO Manual here

THANK YOU

That's odd for sure. It should work fine...

I can't think of much you can do besides test the 600P in the other m.2 slot :/. As a side note, though, the 850 evo won't work in the other m.2 slot, since that one is PCIe only, so you can't test the possibly dysfunctional m.2 slot with your 850 evo.

Thanks for your comment.

Not yet, this would require removal of gfx card and disassembly of a heat sink - might do this eventually but i figured I would post here first.

I'm guessing Intel SSD's simply won't work on any M.2 slot? This is what the manual says

Quote

1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slot*

*

For 2 or 3 Intel

®

SSDs on CPU support, install a Hyper M.2 X16 card (sold

separately) into the PCIeX16 slot, and enable this card under BIOS settings.

IMO, return that Intel SSD and just grab a 2.5 inch SATA SSD and call it a day.

Thing is, I tried the Intel SSD on a friends board in one of the m.2 slots and it had no problem recognizing.

Unfortunately, my case is super small - not designed for any 2.5 drives. With the second m.2 slot, my intention was to never need a 2.5 incher.

I might be able to rig something up for a 2.5, we'll see if I can figure the m.2. Pretty frustrating.

The test needs to be on the exact same board in the same M.2 slot to verify if there's some compatibility issues with your board or not. Looks like you have no choice but to disassemble the Samsung M.2 and test your Intel in that M.2 slot. If the Intel still does not work, just return it and get another brand of M.2 drive.
