Context is important! Why are you asking this question?

Technically you dont need something newer, but I wouldnt exactly recommend buying a Z97 system unless you're getting a good deal on a used system for example. Or if oyu already have one, the chipset itself probably isnt the deciding factor for needing to upgrade, as the GPU is more important.

Z97 is still a good platform for strictly gaming, and shouldnt bottleneck any GPU you put in on the current market today. Only reason IMO anyone should upgrade is if they need more CPU power like Ryzen or Coffeelake.

Used pricing in comparison to Ivy Bridge is autistic as all hell, but overall it's still a good platform because when it comes down to it Intel hasn't done a whole hell of a lot to innovate (only ~10-15% boost in overall performance with every tick of their tick-tick-tick-tick-tick bullshit).

im using a Z87 chipset board, sure it might be old .. but with the i7 4790k it works fine and thats what i need it to do

if you already have a Z97 system you should be fine as long as your cpu and gpu can do what you want them to do, but i wouldnt buy a z97 if i was buying one now聽
