Are there any free Vpn services? I have heard of Openvpn and that it is free but don't really understand how it works.

There are free ones, but there are restriction on how much data you can use.

First, why do you want a VPN?

To stay anonymous and for occasionally P2P torrenting

So then you definitely don't want a free VPN, you also want to ensure the VPN you choose doesn't log data or is in the jurisdiction of your home country. Those are a few things to think about, there are more, but I'd start there.

You can go with the option ACE VPN.  I use this service. They provide all features at affordable cost. I afford it easily. you can access it over 25+ countries.

I've been POCing CyberGhost for the last few days because of their $99 for 3-year + 30 day guarantee.

Speeds have been great and they are rated solid for torrenting (though I really don't torrent much these days).

I primarily use my VPN on my cell phone as I do most of my bills, depositing checks, and making random impulse buys on my phone.

I am looking to configure OpenVPN on a portable travel router for when I travel out of the country for work (NA + Europe) and want to stream without issues.

Also, from my research, as CyberGhost and NordVPN are both based in countries that do not have the ability to demand user and log information (Romania and Panama respectively), that's a big perk as well.

With that said, free doesn't really go hand in hand, especially if you are looking to use the service to utilize a lot of traffic.

I wouldn't choose a free VPN. Why do you think they are free? it is like a honeypot for your browsing habits/user data. Take into consideration what Jon Jon and NinJake said. I would suggest something like NordVPN or VPN.ac, they both support P2P and are secure. Though I would choose Nord, because it seems faster and also has a free trial so you can always try it before you buy it. I've found this deal https://nordvpn.com/discount, 3 bucks a month seems pretty reasonable.
