Like Luke and Linus, I am building a computer for a friend. I was wondering if I can post some screen shots of craiglist listings so you guys can help me determine if it as good deal or not. If it is not allowed, I will describe the listing. Right now I am looking for a used 1 tb hard drive by Seagate but it was made for Dell. I guess it was part of an oem system, I see the listing for 10 dollars. It says 1tb on the label and it is 7200 rpm.

Question remains: how many hours did it run? How old is it? There's not that much ultimately to save on hdds. If it is a bargain it's most likely old and therefore risk of failure is high. You get a brand new one at newegg for like $40-45.

Didn't say they will break. But the risk just goes up and if you have no idea what they went through before you had them, why bother if you won't save much?

I do most of my builds via Craigslist etc, because I find it more fun.

If you're looking at used drives, as others have said don't buy just anything. Get them to run Crystaldiskinfo and see how long the drives been on.

Try and get CPUs that are less than 3 years old.

RAM isn't as important, but better brand names have a better chance of getting warrantied.

Yeah, I told a guy to remove the hd of his tower. He's giving me a 35 dollar discount, I can get a new tb drive for 40. Inexpensive and reliable can't never go wrong.

Troll eBay and you'll find better deals. For $200 I got an i5 7600k, motherboard, 240GB SSD, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

hmmm, is it not risky? can you stream with that? lol,

Nope. CPU is under warranty, RAM is under warranty. If any of it's DOA you just file a claim and get your money back.

I don't imagine it's any worse than an old locked i7.

I found a combo, intel - core i5-7600k 3.8ghz quad-core processor + MSI B250M motherboard + PSU. The PSU is a CS550m

How many dollars though? Price is king here, and if it's expensive then it's not a very good deal.

Maybe, maybe not.

Try looking for complete towers. That's where you can get the real winners. If your total budget is around $500 you can definitely get a killer system with a little patience and waiting.
