PSU For MSI GTX 1070TI 8GB

Check out a PSU tier list on the LTT forum. Go for something around 650 watts or above.

 

Make sure it is from a reputable company such as Corsair, EVGA, Coolermaster or Thermaltake.

 

Also, have a minimum of 80+ Gold efficiency rating.

 

You do NOT want to skimp out on the power supply with expensive components. 

Good Day guys, 

Friend is giving me the new https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Bronze-Certified-Non-Modular-CP-9020123-NA/dp/B01N9KIFWF/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1524642156&sr=8-1&keywords=cx750 , will this be good PSU to work with gtx 1070ti ? I heard that some PSU may cause coil whining on this particular models, newbie in this all building thing.

 

Rig is :

i7 7700k

Maximus Apex MB

16GB Ram

SSD and HDD

GTX 1070ti MSI gaming

and this PSU

CX Series is ok-ish but not something solid imo. Go for a bequiet corsair or seasonic 550 Watt Gold PSU. Remember the PSU can fry everything in less than a second so do not go cheap on this!. Also i read some fan noise after a while within the CX Series....

PSU does not cause coil whine. If that card has coil whine, it will whine no matter what.

650W is twice as much wattage as he needs, all companies are equally capable of selling crap and the 80+ rating says nothing about how good the PSU is.

I'm pretty sure he has a fully built system as well. What if he decided to put two of them in SLI? He will need more power.

The only thing multi GPU setups scale properly in, is cost. Support for multi GPU is going down, and it still comes with the usual issues. It does not make sense to waste money to open up the possibility to get a setup that doesn't make sense. 

Even for SLI 1070 Tis, he's still looking at under 550W under a synthetic load, so there's that as well.

Well it's alright to have some spare watts. Even though they are rated for higher wattages, doesn't mean they will draw that amount. They will only draw how much they have to,

I know that. But having half the capacity of the PSU as "spare watts" doesn't really make sense. And spending more to get absolutely no benefit at all doesn't really make sense either.

You can get a good quality 450 or 550W PSU for the same price as your CX750.

 

Why do you want a rather shitty, high wattage one, when you can get a really good 450W and you don't need the +300W anyways??

Oh dear...

No, 650W are bullshit for his system.

w/o OC he doesn't even need a 500W, a good quality 400-450W PSU is more than sufficient.

 

The 650W unit usually gives him nothing.

I have here a document telling me that a ~600W PSU is way louder than the ~500W version, has

+200rpm in idle and also in any other cases.

Another false statement.

The Brand is irrelevant because everybody in the PSU area has about the same oppurtunity. 

And YOU could even get all the needed Parts (minus PCB) off of Digikey and Mouser. So its more or less an arrangement of Jellybean Components.

 

The name on the Label does only Matter for Warranty stuff...

 

As with the ones you mentioned: EVGA isn't great, rather meh, has a totally chaotic lineup, Cooler Master is OKish, not that great and Thermaltake is mostly rather bad with only 1 or two units worth thinking about...

 

You are missing companys like Bitfenix, Cougar, be quiet.

Not entirely false, since there are no high quality 80plus Bronze and Silver units on the market.

There were however some PSU that had rather shitty efficiency but I'd like to have - like Silverstone Zeus 750 or 850W. And at one Time I had an 850W Zeus but returned it because the user that had it before me did cut off some cables and other stuff...

I kinda do agree, but he also doesn't need to waste money on it either.

And wasting money on 650W (or more), that doesn't offer him any benefits at all makes no sense.

 

If you recommend something for more money, it should offer a benefit for the user - wich a higher Wattage PSU does not.

In many cases you get a louder unit or not any quieter than the lower wattage one but waste something like 10-15€ on the Wattage you don't need without getting anything in return.

Have you ever tried SLI/CF in recent years??

 

It doesn't even work with most games these days!

I've tried it on NIer:Automata and some Koei Tecmo game (I don't remember wich one, I think it was Samurai Warriors 4). Bethesda even states in their FAQ, that SLI/CF doesn't work on Wolfenstein II - the new Colossus.


So for what would he want SLI/CF?! That's an argument that makes no sense. Especially since there still is the 1080 and 1080ti wich he can turn to. And it always makes more sense to sell the card you have and get a faster one.

 

And the "what if" isn't something normal users do. This PC will be used 5-10 years with replacing the graphics cards every couple of years...

 

As for SLI/CF Argument:

Ryzen 7/1700X on ASUS X370-F Strix, _TWO_ 7970GHz/280X, 575W Primary.

With around 90% Efficiency that translates to around 518W Secondary. So even with that setup I have 32,5W left.

WHAT are the benefits?!

There are NONE!

THAT is the Problem!

Only disadvantages -> Cost more, probably higher fan RPM (is the case with Bitfenix Whisper M, where it goes from <500rpm to 700rpm and with other units as well).

Without knowing anything about the PSU series, you can not recommend the higher wattages, because you don't know if they are any benefits. Most of the times there are disadvantages!

Its an OKish PSU, nothing special.

Essentially a Silverstone Strider Platinum with some Bling Bling RGB Stuff and lesser efficiency.

 

But you could save a couple of bucks with a PSU that fits your needs better than that unit does.

That's not entirely true.

 

I had a card with really annoying coil whine and depending on the PSU I used, the sound changed. WIth some it was more annoying than with others...

But since the fans of that card were rather annoying, I replaced mit with a Gigabyte Card wich worked fine for me. Was a bit louder under load but way quieter under lower load.

 

But if you hear it, you hear it, the PSU won't change much. Replacing the Graphics card does...

Yeah, but why should I when I bought it new and just can send it back to the dealer and get a different one?
Its a bit of a hassle as I have to live without a GPU for a Week or two...

 

Oh and by the way; It doesn't need to be the Coils!!!

Its referred as Coil Whine but how do you know its not Capacitor Whine??

that's why the entire PCB should be covered in glue. Probably need high thermal conductivity on it too.

650W is the most useless wattage, just check the internal differences between Corsair RM550x, RM650x and RM750x (as an example)

The best you can do is to buy the highest quality power supply you can get. Watts don't go first and that's a rather low power PC. Even with 400W you would be fine. Stefan's recommendations are great.

I'm pretty sure that Linus built a system with a 7700k and 2 1080's in SLI, if I remember correctly, it only pulled 500 watts from the wall. 

 

I rarely see it posted but look at the Seasonic lineup. They are an OEM(they make the PSU's for Corsair and others) usually have fantastic warranties and comparable prices.

 

JohnnyGURU review the Seasonic FOCUS PLUS 550w last year and rated them very high. They have a hybrid switch and a 10 year warranty. Can't go wrong with them. I have the 650w version. 

 

Why are non-modular power supplies still a thing?

Here we go again...

 

1. they don't make much for Corsair these days, only the AX series wich I believe is EOL.

2.There aren't many companys ordering from Seasonic because they aren't as great as you say they are.

3. If a company makes a PSU themselve or lets other do it for them is irrelevant!

 

What counts is the know how of the ones ordering the stuff and what they want.

 

EVERYONE can do amazing stuff with any company!

Some have better manufacturing though than others...

Yes you can, just look at the complaints about the Prime series and other Seasonics as well.

And look at the fan curve of Seasonic units. They usually aren't that great.

 

So yeah, there are other/better alternatives.

Because every connector has a resistance and is a potential for trouble.

 

That's why some Electricians or Electronic guys prefer hard wired cables because one less point of failure.

Sounds like you're just hating on the brand. The advice and information you've provided is pretty garbage.

Sounds like you're just hating on the brand. The advice and information you've provided is pretty garbage.

Some people actually prefer facts over opinions.

Yup, JohnnyGURU reviewed the 550, 750 and 850 FOCUS PLUS gold psu's. 550 and 850 received a 9.8 and the 750 a 9.6 on his rating scale. The 550w version of that Seasonic PSU would be fine for OP's build and from the review, its a really good piece of hardware.  

 

Everything Stefan was writing just stunk of personal opinion without showing any factual information to go along with his claims...
