About that time. CPU & Mobo upgrade.

I've been running an AMD 8350 Black now since 2013ish & I feel like it's time to move on.

As a note, I did look at Ryzen but I really want to go with Intel this time.

For now, I'll be pairing the chip with an EVGA 970 FTW. I game at 1080 with a 144hz main monitor & 60hz second monitor that usually has chrome up. I'm considering any chip from the 8400 up to the 8700k.

I know the basics of overclocking but don't put much time into it. I don't stream, video edit, etc. I want a small form factor ITX build that runs quietly. But still has the power to take advantage of my 144hz monitor. I don't plan on upgrading the CPU once I buy it so I'm willing to drop a little extra on it to make sure it will be viable in the next 3 to 5 years.

Any advice welcome.

I recommend for budget to go with the i7-7700 but if you have a hole in your pocket reach for the i7-8700K if you can.

You may need one of these to reach it tough. Pretty expensive...

I'd go for a locked i7-8700 with a nice ITX (Z370) board and your typical DDR4-3200 memory. The logic behind this is that ITX boards don't OC well and small ITX cases don't have the best airflow. Going with a locked chip with lower heat output but similar turbo speeds while saving a few bucks on CPU and cooler seems pretty attractive to me. Z370 is there for mostly better memory support, so you're not limited to 2666.

This would be the ball park in terms of money:

Why not a b360. They don't even have overclocking and its cheaper are cheaper. For ran get the cheapest 16 gb kit. With the prices now it isn't worth it.

Considering Ryzen 2 (or "+" or whatever) launches next week, I'd wait for that. Not necessarily with the mind of buying it, but to see what it can offer before going with Intel.

However, I just scored an awesome deal on a used i5 4670K, a Z87 MB + 8 GB of DDR3 for a really good price. The 4th generation overclockable i5 and i7 chips (particularly 4670K, 4690K, 4770K and 4790K) are selling cheaply and performs great, even compared to current equivalents.

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

B360 ITX boards are barely cheaper. The premium for 3200 over 2666 is negligible in price. The performance difference between 2133 and 3200 obviously isn't negligible.

A little over $600 would work great, I also hadn't thought about the 8700 running cooler because of its TDP. Thanks for the advice.

Locked i7 8700 should be the best since it still has that 4.3ghz all cores boost on latest IPC which gives it about the same single thread performance of the i7 7700k (stock) ensuring you'll have quite the high fps while it's much lower 65w TDP makes it easier to tame temperature wise with a solid low profile aftermarket cooler.

You will also have about the same multi-threading capacity of the 8 cores 16 threads Ryzen 7 1700 at stock with it so the life expectancy is high.
