OK, it's complicated.  More complicated than getting the $12 adapter..... but -

Save back up to HDD

Create USB boot with windows

swap M.2

Boot from USB and restore to the M.2

Note- This is a really convoluted way of doing this that I have never personally attempted.

Good luck.

So my friend is gonna buy a new m.2 ssd for his laptop which had a preinstalled m.2 but with lesser space. He has his windows which came preinstalled and a few other stuff on there. Is there a way to move all the data to the new ssd without reinstalling windows. Ps i already asked him why would he not just reinstall windows and he insists on keeping the same windows.

Try Clonezilla. Simple to use, does what you want. Install it on a USB, boot of the USB, plug in a hard drive and clone the system

Don't forget to quote when replying to me

What SSD?  If you haven't bought one yet, get a samsung and use their software.  Works very well.

One option is to clone it, but people seem to be against that for some reason or another. Another option is to create a System Image and use that to restore the OS on the new SSD.

Otherwise the pains of reinstalling can be mitigated by:

  • Seeing if the apps they use are on http://ninite.com/, which greatly simplifies the app installation process
  • Copying the contents of their user folder into the new drive.

Samsung magician.  Update it to the latest version and it's pretty easy from there.  You just have to make sure the size of the data being cloned will fit on the new drive.

Note - The data Migration software is the stuff to clone. The magician is more drive health and optimization.

My friend has only one m.2 slot. Would this method work ?

I have never successfully cloned a system boot drive and have it be stable or problem free.

No.  The software only works with 2 working drives, one of them a samsung.  I have never had a drive not work with this software, but you have to do it the way it says.  Sorry.

You are going to need 2 drives no matter what you do.  If you have 2 m.2 and only one connector for it you are stuck.

at that point why not just backup to an external storage and pave a new install of windows? Why is it so critical that you clone?

OK, let's make sure we are all on the same page here.  The Laptop has a small M.2 SSD, an HDD and you want to upgrade the M.2 to a bigger one?
