DNS timing out every hour exactly?

Hey guys, internet is dropping exactly every hour with the following error:

MICHEALS-SERVER 1014 Warning Microsoft-Windows-DNS Client Events System 02/04/2018 15:29:06

Name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

This started happening after I built a pfsense firewall and changed to a static IP address and static DNS servers.

I dont believe I have anything weird configured

DNS servers on the firewall/router are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

DNS servers assigned on my Windows server are the same as above (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

I have DNS resolver enabled on pfsense. Thats about it.

Anyone have any ideas where I could start?

Thanks

Well right off the bat it's doing it every hour because the lease time for the DHCP handler is set to check the lease of every device every hour to either renew the lease or return the IP to the pool. I'm willing to bet it's giving you this error every hour because of that.

As to the cause of the error itself. Static DNS is fine. If you set a static public IP that might be the issue.

If your router has DNS set, why not use the router as your DNS server for your PC?

I don't have a problem...

I couldn't change the DNS settings last night as people were using the server.

But this morning I managed to change it to use my router as the primary DNS server and I'm still getting the error, but now every 2 hours exactly! ha xD

Funny really, have any explanation for that?

Well I already made it 50% better, do i really have to keep going ;)

What is the lease time for your nodes within your network? every hour/every two hours, perhaps?

That was just a fluke xD

But . . . looks like you're right again on the 2 hours:

Quote

This is used for clients that do not ask for a specific expiration time. The default is 7200 seconds.

Still weird though that the DNS is failing.

I'm just gonna add a IP address reserve for my servers MAC address, I'm sure this will bypass the lease time? Or am I wrong?

Thanks for the replies btw!

np. glad to help. it should bypass DHCP lease times if you are assigning static IPs to their MAC addresses, yes. If you want a more stable connection for your less critical devices too, though, you can always increase that time, or set it to never expire depending on your router.
