Just thought I'd drop this here. The dude wants £499 (thats $706 USD or $910 CAD) for an ANCIENT rig. Specs are i5 2400, 16gb ddr3 (overkill af for such an old system, will also slow boot times down due to superfetch being a little clumsy with large amounts of RAM), 3tb hdd (needs GPT and UEFI to even use full capacity), ATI Radeon HD 4800 graphics and here's an even funnier bit, WINDOWS 10 PRO, an OS that doesn't even support the HD 4xxx series. Will post screenshots below, enjoy the laugh fellow techies.

What do you mean? My Radeom HD 3450, 3870 and 4560 work fine in Windows 10.

My oldest working system is a Dell Inspiron 530 (12 years old) but slightly newer specs (e8400 instead of 4400, 6350 instead of 2400 pro, 10 pro instead of vista home premium) and it performs on par with that system and even has supported graphics drivers on win10.

I'd probably say it's like £120-150. Depends on how well the hard drive is and what brand..

the 16GB DDR3 is nice though.

 

Edit: My Oldest system is a core 2 Duo, as it's when I started the whole PC thing.

So many issues because of the whole master/slave thing.

Yea I'm talking drivers so you get an acceptable resolution. Current PC i'm typing on has mobo radeon hd 3000 series graphics that scale terribly on 10.

I agree the RAM is nice but it can bog down the boot times cuz of superfetch in 10, something you definitely don't wanna do if you're booting from a HDD.

I like the case also but it looks like a cheap brand, maybe a CiT or something.

Thing about the 2400 is it's still highly opular and can easily be paired with a 1050ti.

 

For that price, I'd expect a 1060 but hey.

How does Superfetch slow things down when you have more RAM?

PSU is some unknown brand thing that I personally think is a stupid idea because it could blow at any minute if its a crappy psu.

All of my systems with those GPUs work fine with Windows 10. The drivers install properly for me. I don't know where you're getting your information from.

No 10 drivers on the website, it only goes up to 8. I assumed 8 drivers didnt work on 10.

You assumed wrong then. I've had parts work with Windows 10 while using Windows 7 drivers. Those GPUs work fine. That system in itself isn't worth that much, but I'd pay about £50 for it.

Well I learned something new. Always assumed that drivers for different windows versions wouldn't work on anything other than the version it's for since I've seen broken drivers for different versions before (vista drivers on 7). Pricing wise, I agree with you that its not worth much due to its age.

Linus made a logical blunder of correlation implying causation. And the article that was screen capped made no mention of more RAM = slower boot times and even recommends leaving it on if the system is running fine. You also have to consider the alternative: if you don't have your commonly used apps preloaded, you're going to have to wait longer for them to reload. And collectively, they may take longer to do so than if you just let Superfetch do its thing (which if I recall correctly, Superfetch copies some data or rearranges the data so it's faster to access anyway)

 

Besides, even if it was the case, it was only one extra second of boot time in his test case.

As long as the drivers are compatible with WDDM, Windows 10 is fine with it.

Nope. A lot of windows 7 and 8 drivers work fine in Windows 10. It's needed on some systems. The installer may not run for the driver, but it's easy enough to use Compatibility Mode for the driver's setup wizard.

I see worse all the time... just don't buy in the UK... we get ripped of 99% of the time (though I've seen the occasional bargain, My GPU, an i3 win 10 newish pc for £50 etc)... but the other 400+ items I browsed were all either marked *up* on as new prices (1tb HDD £40-50 when I can get it new for £35) or extremely old, Windows XP "worked fine, nothing wrong with it... except the giant hole punched through the motherboard" for £80 or so.

 

Oh, and the best one was a "new motherboard, I bought the wrong one, soselling it" for new price, with the photo showing about 10 or more pins totally screwdrivered out, and the comment "works perfectly" under the description.

Yea my current pc (FX 6300 based system) got kinda broke due to some idiot selling me a 950 SC that fried the pcie x16 slot for some reason. Refunded on that now. Good deals can be found though, the Dell Inspiron I mentioned in a previous post was actually donated to me by some pretty generous folks, only cost me £20 ish to put it right (new hdd, cpu and gpu), took the windows 10 from my old lappy. (digital license on my MS account).

HD 4850 here on old pc. Resolution in W10 works fine, after downloading drivers from AMD of course. What doesn't work are fan profiles. It needs afterburner to turn down the fan speed.

Yeah, searching now we got a couple of XP machines, probably running Pentium Ds or less for £20-£40 and a couple of i3s running Win 10 (probably free upgrade) and an aftermarket 660 or similar for £200+.

 

A G4 PowerMac at £50.

 

The funniest one was when the local second hand store was selling the Nintendo retro consoles for £20 more, second hand, than the supermareket next door was selling them new, and had a ton of stock anyhow! That's the kind of rip offs we get here.

Recently downloaded (from amd's site) and installed drivers for a ati hd3850 card on a system with windows 10, had no issues with scaling or resolution, runs 1080p 75mhz display fine. That system definitely does seem overpriced, but if someone does pay for it oh well. As far as ancient rigs, my sig says plenty.

The display drivers, however, are the ones built into Windows 10. AMD does not provide Windows 10 drivers from their site, meaning you cannot use CCC to fix underscan issues with certain monitors and such.
