It can do FairSeq 10 times as fast because of the ram limits in the old system. The actual computing power is only 2x, not 10x. Look at the TFLOPs or number of compute units. They went from 8 cards to 16 cards, it is 2x the speed.

it's still a 399 000$US computer with 16 fully enabled Volta GPU's wich packs a total of 81,920 CUDA Cores with 512 GB HBM2 memory and a 14.4 TB/s aggregate bandwidth and 300 GB/s GPU to GPU...and dual xeon platinums

Yeah and the previous one is less than half the price and is 8 x V100 cards. This one is 16 of the same cards. No new chips.

i think what is new is the WAY they are connected...but i'm not sure though...cause 10 times faster is not exactly equal to twice as fast...

MARKETING! What they are saying is that if you are training a larger model wherein you run out of memory in the old system, the new system would be 10x faster as you would be gaining speed from the memory improvements. If you aren't doing a "4x bigger models" type training, then you will only have a 2x performance increase, as the new system is literally just twice as many cards as the old system put together with more and faster ram.

Yeah I agree they just slapped on 16gbs more of memory and double the number of GPUs to make it look impressive

Actually nVidia's slide was very revealing about how slow things are progressing. The first training was on 2x GTX 580. Now that costs 1,000 bucks. So now you can be 500 times faster if you buy a 400 times more expensive system 6 years later. That isn't really progress... it's a kind of progress, but not a very good kind.

Basically it would have been impressive if it was for the same price, but nVidia can't magically lower the price of ram (thanks Samsung /s), and they can't make a better chip except for their tensor cores which have some limited uses. Honestly the foundries like TSMC should be getting most of the credit for our improving computers. Except for the revolution of AMD's infinity fabric, nothing much has changed in chip design in the last 5 years.

 

I'm looking forward to 7nm :)

Honestly, to be fair. nVidia didn't release any new chips at all. They are using the old V100 chips just like before. Why am I even allowing them to claim that the new system is 2x the speed of the old one? If Intel released a motherboard that accepted 4 cpus instead of 2, we wouldn't say Intel released something twice the speed of the old one. Still the same cpus, nothing has changed at all.

You could technically argue the product is the DGX-2 as a whole and that would be 2X as fast.

It can do FairSeq 10 times as fast because of the ram limits in the old system. The actual computing power is only 2x, not 10x. Look at the TFLOPs or number of compute units. They went from 8 cards to 16 cards, it is 2x the speed.

I agree, what AlistairA is pointing out is that the increase in performance has more to do with new hardware configuration than technological advancement on Nvidia's Part. The new DGX-2 does have improved performance but its not because the GPU base has advanced technologically in any significant way, it is because of the added new cards and an improved system backbone, so that it can better leverage the performance of the cards. (Think if you had a Gaming PC running an Old Core 2 duo with 4 GB Ram and 1 1080Ti, the cpu/mb/ram configuration would be bottle-necking the system so then you change the CPU-Ram-Storage and Motherboard to a more advance X299 platform with 32gb of Ram and add a 2nd GPU, --now lets theoretically say that due to the combination of the 2nd card and upgraded platform you get 4x the performance--is it fair to say Nvidia increased performance by 4x-- No they did not - the change in platform increased the performance by removing the bottleneck) Is the new backbone faster, yes, but its not due to any significant advancement on Nvidia's part, its just a higher end configuration with higher end components.
