Upgrade to which i5?

so i have an i3 7100 (with stock cooler) and i want to upgrade to an i5, im thinking of an i5 7600k or an i5 7500, i dont plan to overclock SOON i want it for more power

so is it a better choice to use an i5 7600k with the i3 stock until i get a proper cpu cooler

or should i get a i5 7500?

Thanks :D

I wouldn't call that much of a worthwhile upgrade. If you have a board with a locked chipset, just get a locked i7 of the same gen and call it a day.

If you dont have Z mobo then it's pointless to get a better cooler or K chips. You just cant overclock no matter what.

i5 6500 and 7500 are best for you, but watch out for the price, but dont to pay more than $150 for those, otherwise hopping over to Ryzen will be cheaper, and not that far off from getting 8th gen.

My motherboard works with the i7 but the i5 7th gen seems the best to go because any lower and it wont support my DDR4 ram and the i7 is $140 more

Well, do you have a B or H chipset? We need that info. If you don't have a Z170 or Z270 chipset, you're stuck with locked chips. Furthermore, a 4c/t4t is kinda anemic nowadays. I'd still try to get an i7-7700 or i7-6700. Worst case scenario, the 6700 will clock down your memory to 2133. There isn't any noticeable difference between 2133 and 2400 anyway.

I have a prime b250m-k im asking because the i5 7600k seemed better bc of the higher speeds.

also because the i5 seems more accessible to where i live.

None, don't waste your money upgrading on Z270, wait for Ryzen 2 on April 19th and get a 6 core 12 thread R5 2600 chip at $200 + <$99 AM4 motherboard

Especially if you don't have a Z270 board*

It's not pointless.  People always forget that the K models are faster at stock, and getting a better cooler means no coil whine.  I'm not suggesting it, but that doesn't make it pointless.

@PotatoYT9  I recommend getting a used i7-6700 if you can.  Better performance for about the same cost.  Then sell your 7100 for $80.

You could upgrade to a 6 core 12 thread ryzen chip even with a new motherboard for not much more money than an i7 upgrade on that platform.

An extra $80-100 is a lot of money to me.  It's not hard to find a used 6700 for around $220, and that's tax free.

Alright, Thanks a lot guys :)

It's actually cheaper to buy an R5 1600 with an ASrock Pro4 than it is to buy that 6700

Fuck is going on with those prices?

Anyways just buy ryzen, screw upgrading on that platform to a lowly 4c/8t chip.

You mentioned Ryzen 2 and spending $300, so that's what I was basing the price on.

If they turn turbo clocks off, that is.

6600 and 6600k has the same turbo frequencies on each core usage.

I didn't realize there was an exception, but the K models usually have 100-200MHz higher base AND turbo frequencies.

Lord no, the i7 8700 makes far more sense if you're going intel, because it's 6c/12t rather than only 6 cores, of course Ryzen is usually the better performnace per dollar option overall.
