Not to take away from the demo but that's pretty much four Titan V's and we're getting a cinematic 24fps at 1080p. Don't get too excited because this stuff is likely still to be very far away from consumers for gaming.

To put this a bit more in perspective of how crazy this machine that they're using is, it isn't 4 Titan Vs/Tesla V100s. It's 8. It took a computer with over 40k cuda cores to run this in real time.

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

It's also, more than likely, leveraging part of the Tensor Cores, which aren't going to show up in consumer cards.

Yeah I'd agree. But Nvidia did say that their AI driven RTX runs at 2-3x faster than DXR (the Microsoft implementation) and that their Volta series GPU's will be the first to support it. Maybe I'm reading into this wrong but it sounds like the implication is that Volta as an architecture will feature Tensor Cores.

They're going to need to find nearly 100x or better implementation for it to ever see any use on consumer cards before the 2030s. (Somehow, we're still going to be asking, "but can it run Crysis?" by that point.) Weird part is that Volta is never going to be in the mainstream products, and the big changes were in Compute with Volta. Thus, unless Nvidia is expecting this to be more of a GPGPU function, it's still never going to really see any use on games for a long, long, long time.

People in cinema special effects have been saying the tools and software are woefully out of date and real time movie scene rendering COULD be in the near future. I think we have seen a piece of that future just now. Soon enough I believe we will see game engine like developments for the CG in movies. Developed very similarly to games where scenes are set up entirely digitally, cameras, lighting, etc. are setup in engine and then copied IRL for filming of actors and conventional effects. Tying the in-engine camera to the IRL camera allowing the entire scene and lighting to be synced in real time between the two allowing a seamless compositing of the scene. 

 

I really hope this stuff gets expanded upon and developed post haste. The kind of stuff that could be done for less money and lower man-power. WETA in your home garage.

I hope this never comes, another flop just like VR that barely works on current gpu's.

 

Instead of making better servers and better physics they invest in this shit, people are so superficial they are going to play the same cheap mechanics game with microtransactions but better reflections meh.

I want those massive worlds like Star citizen with infinite amount of gameplay options and mechanics, i couldnt care less if the textures are 2x2k or 4x4k, the less the faster is going to run on my machine.

Maybe, although AMD's Vega is taking the alternate route by using a considerable amount of its die space to support 2x FP16. I think it might actually be a smart move for them to move to one unified design for both business and consumer GPU's. I mean they already have a good lead in efficiency as well as outright performance so they might as well have a unified architecture to save on costs as well as increase adoption for the tech they're trying to push.

I'm really not impressed.

 

Sadly it may be due to the lies and deceit.

 

 

This below was apparently using GTX 600 series GPU's yet in reality not a single card now could render a quarter of that scene in it's full complexity.
