Epic Shows off a Realtime Raytraced Star Wars Scene Powered By a $150K (USD) Nvidia GPU System

In the computer graphics community this week, companies from Nvidia to Microsoft have been stressing just how important real-time raytracing will be to making games look more movie-like in the near future. Epic Games used a striking demo at a Game Developers Conference keynote presentation this morning to show just how much better raytracing can make real-time, interactive graphics look with top-of-the-line hardware right now.

 

The Star Wars "Reflections" demo, made with the cooperation of Industrial Light and Magic, showed two extremely realistic-looking and talkative Stormtroopers clamming up in an elevator when the shiny Captain Phasma pops in. Running on what Epic still refers to as “experimental code” (planned to be introduced to Unreal Engine for production later this year) the raytracing in the demo allows background elements like the guns and the opening elevator doors to reflect accurately off Phasma’s mirror-like armor in real time. These are the kinds of effects that Epic CTO Kim Libreri highlights they’ve “never been able to do before [with rasterized graphics].”

 

Here's the kicker, though:

IMO, this looks freaking amazing--almost looks as if it's an actual filmed scene from a Star Wars movie. We kind of got a taste of it, aesthetically, with the Star Wars Battlefront photogrammetry stuff, but this is on a different plane.

 

Update: Nvidia reached out to Ars Technica to correct a detail about the rendering engine:

Imagine The Last of Us or one of the Uncharted games powered by this. 

 

Things don't necessarily need to be in 4K or 8K if the very details, textures, and environmental effects are done well. I'm sure that tech demo would look just as compelling if it were downscaled to 1080. Today's games take too many shortcuts and optimizations to focus on resolution and framerate, and those are not substitutes for realism.

If you use Moore's law as a rough guide, and halve the price every two years, it'll hit sub $600 (unadjusted for inflation) in about 16 years.

It looks fine, but how would it look like in the same setup except without the raytracing thing? I missed a side-by-side or back-to-back comparison to know what comes from where.

Impressive, but if it's taking $150,000 system to render that, we're looking at needing 300x multiple of value to get it down to a $500 price point. If Moore's Law held in GPUs (it really doesn't), that should be between 16-18 years to be at the consumer level.

 

Which is to say, at least the upcoming Animated Movies will look better.

I hope, if this becomes the norm, one day a 16 year old just wont be able to distinguish reality and call of duty and all this gonna go up in flames.

And dont tell me "its just a tech demo", nearly all the tech demos in the last whoknows how many years have been about "cinematic expirience" instead of "look, we can run doom on a potato and it plays well"

Assuming we find an economical solution to the 7nm wall then yes, however that seems unlikely to be a quick process and 16 years is a long time in computer terms, I mean a mere 18 years ago people thought all computers were going to fail due to a date.

Admiring the reflection of three zombies as I behead them in slow motion with a highly polished machete in Dying Light 2.

That's very true--Intel's move to 10nm was delayed several times because of problems with extreme-UV lithography. On the other hand, GPU tasks are much more amenable to parallel operations than CPUs, which means they could get away with superscalar designs for a while. 

 

By the by, I looked up IGN's game of the year 16 years ago, and it looked like this:

You're completely missing the point. We won't get this in games for like another 15-20 years, this isn't about gaming. It's just about how fucking amazing it is that this is being rendered in real time. I mean come on, this is a 150 thousand dollar machine doing this, this isn't coming for a LOOOOONG time. If you understood that maybe you'd be just as impressed as everyone else. I agree with your point on gameplay and performance being more important than looks, but again, that has nothing to do with anything.

It's not just me, right? Nvidia's line about how the high end Volta cards are 'not for gaming' is becoming increasingly transparent. Demos like this aren't built overnight. Entire APIs were being written to achieve this. Which means at the same time they were calling Volta GPUs deep learning cards they were putting together game demos with it. They also say that games that use RTX will be out 'this year.'

But wow. Real time raytracing. That's THE thing thing I was fantasizing about 15 years ago. It's an insane demo. I'm just glad they didn't believe their own lines or we wouldn't be seeing it.

The future is certainly near. WOW. After a couple more generations like it's totally possible this could be done with 2 GPU's... 60 FPS or more will take a lot though.

I wonder how much drive space all the files for Epic's ray-tracing demo took up. I also wonder how long it will be before we get that kind of visual impression in games.

I've been playing this online for the past few days.

Battlefield 1942 is freeware now, I believe. At least, it was being given away for free on Origin for some years until EA removed it from Origin completely, when Gamespy shut down and the official server hosting for the original Battlefield games was no longer available.

 

I haven't tried this, but EA might still add the game to people's Origin accounts if they ask for it through Origin support.

The future is certainly near. WOW. After a couple more generations like it's totally possible this could be done with 2 GPU's... 60 FPS or more will take a lot though.

I doubt everything would be performed via ray tracing, unless were already at the point where an unbiased render can be ran in real-time. :P

 

Certain effects, such as reflections, global illumination, and shadows, can be performed with ray tracing without going too far overboard on computational requirements. As a bonus, memory requirements for using ray tracing are actually reduced.

 

Glass is going to be a lot more expensive, especially where caustics and refraction are involved. Rough reflections are also more expensive than smooth ones, which was probably why that one raytraced Doom demo had nothing but smooth reflections.
