Moving Question

Hello everyone,

 

I am moving across the states and I have a desktop computer that I plan on bringing with me.

I don't plan on shipping the computer but bringing it in my car with me. Is there anything I should do with the hardware before moving? The drive is around 24 hours.

If i have a graphics card (GTX 970 from ASUS) and a Hyper 212 attached, will those risk breaking from all the shaking?

if your PC isnt as soft as the cars in beam.ng drive, then you will be fine just putting it in the back and driving away.

If you want to be safe remove the graphics card, but other than that it is fine.

put a seatbelt on the pc hahah, but no i dont think anything would happen as long as you drive safely and avoid bumpy roads

I moved to the US (By plane, more BS) and I got the CPU, GPU, RAM, Heatsink and HDD on a box and still the Heatsink died. I recommend to put the stuff in original packinging to be safe.

I travel all over the place with my PC. I frequently drive from Maryland to Ohio and back and from Toledo to Cincinnati. I have a suitcase large enough for my PC. I put a fleece blanket in the suitcase, put the PC in and then cover the side panel window with the overhang of the fleece blanket. I stuff pillows (and the box with my monitor mount) around in the dead space. I then place my keyboard on top, my mouse in the front pocket. My monitors (I have 2x 27" monitors) go in a single 27" monitor box padded by packing peanuts at the bottom and a blanket between the screens. 

 

I don't take apart anything. I've never had any issues.

Or lay it down flat so the weight of both those things are going into the motherboard instead of at a 90º angle to it.

Not really. My Heatsink broke and it was stored separately. The PSU can stay  tho, like the motherboard. But fans can stay tbh.

Lay it down. Make sure it is contained/wedged with other things so that shifting is less likely. Drive accordingly.

Ill be driving from Michigan to Florida, assuming the highways aren't pothole ridden, it should be fine as long as it is wedged between seats and other things?

Yeah it should be fine. At least get your drive out to be safe. You don't wanna download all that again that you have.

new HDD's will be more resilient

just remove and wrap up the GPU

if you're worried just take out the HDD and wrap it up in bubble wrap

One time I threw my 2016 laptop across the yard

You sure you don't have a SSD in there

 

I dropped a HDD that is off on my carpet from 1m high and it started making ticking noises

It's not an SSD

guess it's just different circumstances

Just wedge it so it doesn't move much. Use something soft, like pillows or bags of clothes. Or just seatbelt. I've moved few times in past year, about 500km in one direction at the time. If you spend night while travelling, take case inside to your accommodation to prevent any greedy bastard from breaking into your car for it.
