Does anyone know where i can get the full version of quake from to play on original hardware?

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

Anyone got some recommendations for a decent 3D accelerator for my K6-2?  I've been playing with an old Voodoo 3 3000 but it seems to be defective so is going back to ebay.

It has an S3 Trio 3D/2X in it at the moment

You'll be a little limited with the physical slot if you're using AGP, I believe the boards for a K6-2 are all AGP 2X, correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while.

So Voodoo 3, Diamond S3 cards like the Savage 3D. TNT2 based cards are great, as well as original GeForce 256 and Radeon VE/7000s should work also, but a Rage 128 or Rage 3D card will work too.

Keep in mind Voodoo cards were all limited to 16 bit color maximum until the Voodoo 4, so TNTs, Rage series and Radeons and just about everything else will look wayyyy better.

Finding some of those might be a challenge, not gonna lie, but worth it.

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.

can confirm, on my board at least,  It's AGP 2X.  The voodoo works great in 2D that's the annoying thing.  but as soon as I start dxdiag Hardware 3D test is just craps out to this blank screen and I have to restart the computer.  I've got a copy of quake coming (as i only had the shareware to hand) which I'll inject with GLquake when it comes to give it one last test.  I also get an error about not being able to switch to 640x480 16-bit in dxdiag. Unless i swap to the res manually at the desktop first?  Really wierd.  I'm gonna throw in the Trio for the time being and run through the dxdiag tests on that to see if it's anything deeper in the PC doing it.  I'm running Direct X 6.1A i think

I spotted some Radeon VE cards with 64mb for like $20-$30 on eBay today.

I know TNT Ultras are stupid expensive, along with what few GeForce 256 cards are still available. Voodoo cards will also be expensive. Rage cards should be a dime a dozen.

My 2000 AGP works just fine in 98 for dxdiag tests and the like, I think your card may be going bad or your driver's aren't loaded. If you need the 3DFX driver package for 98 I have it backed up.

That's probably similar to the one I have backed up. I would update your directx version as much as you can, I believe you can go all the way to 9.0c on 98.

It's all backwards compatible anyways, you should be able to find the installer for it pretty easy I should think.

The Voodoo 3 itself is a directx 6 part, but the drivers like at least version 7 if I'm not mistaken. I usually just install the best I can and run with it regardless if I'm using my X850 XT or even just a Rage 128. It's been a while since I've put together a 98 system but I keep a disc of important files and drivers for making it run smoothly, I will consult it tonight.

Getting a Core2Duo system and a FM2 system today from work, we cleaned the attic and dumped the old office and shop PC's.

Why's it called an A4 3400 if it's 2C2T 2.7ghz???? Sorry FM1 not FM2. Kind of fun, the Core2Duo system is an old build I sold to work for an extra paid vacation day a long time ago and now I'm getting it back. It's a G43M Combo system which supports some OC'ing and DDR2/3. I had a Pentium Dual core in there with a moderate but stable OC on it, wasn't too bad for a shop PC back in the day. Most importantly though is I got two cases and power supplies that I can re-use for other things. Not grease cases or power supplies....

As lucky as I have been with my hardware, I have never even come close to having a PC that looks that good (though most of my stuff is decidedly budget to barely midrange).

Motherboard has failed caps however. I've never had a board with caps that bad function.

I am absolutely in love with that CPU cooler.

Side note... we're borderline here now with the competition but JEFF insisted I allow cards from 2013 in so he can run an R9 290.

My response....

Spoiler

Received ten, 4 Ti's, 6 regulars. 8 worked out of the box, four of which were the Ti's, so that's all that matters. One powers on but won't display, may just need a baking and #10 put on a fireworks show. Not bad considering my past luck.

I now have to bake 9 cards. 🤪

They all seem to boot into Windows for the most part, but most fail to load their drivers, this is the same behavior exhibited by my 580s, 5850s, 470s, etc that all were saved by baking. So I am relatively unconcerned, at least about 8 of them.

I am gonna order a damn toaster oven so I don't have to use my actual oven to bake a bunch of cards one after the other though. This is going to be time consuming.

Good thing I've got a lot of thermal pads to spare now thanks to sales.

Might be worth investing in a hot air solder station so you can reflow just certain areas.

I have one 😁 I'll be putting it to work tonight on a few of the cards just working with the cores. I like having the oven to do the complete board just in case it's an area I overlook.

I even have a hot plate to preheat the PCB.

Wow that hot plate was worth every penny. So all four 780 Ti's work fine now save an issue with one shutting down when it hits 83C. They're founders coolers so they suck, I'll waterblock that one and see how it reacts. They all hit 83C, just one doesn't like it.

All the 780s so far work fine. In fact thanks to my hot air and hot plate I was able to salvage a choke off the exploded card and transfer it to the one 780 that would not boot, it had a cracked choke by the power delivery. That card works perfectly now.

Edit: 9/10 ain't bad. That's a win in my books. And I'm reasonably sure that if I can salvage the right cap and another choke from some other card, I can fix the fireball 780 too and make it 10 for 10.
