Hello, So i have two machines up stairs in my house however the router is down stairs, So i am thinking about buying a switch tommorow. I have a few questions.

Do I need to buy a switch or can with a 25-30 foot Ethernet cable be powered just fine out of the back of a wireless router? Or would a switch give em more signal integrity?

IF I buy a switch, Should I run it Modem>switch>router or Modem>Router>Switch?

and aswell IF I buy a switch will a cheap 25 dollar switch will that work just as well?

Ethernet can run up to 100m just fine. The LAN ports on the router are technically a switch anyway, different switches/devices don't impact the length of maximum runs themselves, though there are some exceptions to that which you're unlikely to come across on a home network.

It must be run modem>router>switch. The router will perform NAT functions, which are essential for accessing the internet from multiple devices at once on a LAN. Without some fairly involved setup, modem>switch>router wouldn't work. Even with the setup, there's really no benefit to doing it that way, only downsides.

For the switch, go for a Gigabit switch from a known brand like Netgear, TP-Link, D-Link etc.

Ethernet is good for 328 feet. So unless your going past that distance, you dont need a switch.

That being said, if you think your going to have multiple devices you need connected to Ethernet at that location, then a switch could be a good idea. Unless you dont mind running multiple cables to the location.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
