CPU upgrade Need help I don’t know what to do ;(

Hi All,

Firstly, I’m not a tech/IT guy so please don’t laugh at me. Otherwise I will not be posting here right?

So Every month I save a portion of my low peasant salary to upgrade my pc part by part. This time I will have my CPU upgraded to K version (i7 7700K). I am recently using i7 6700 (non K) and my MoBo is Asus H110m-a m.2 (yeah mobo is my next upgrade so I can overclock). So I need to use my current mobo for the mean time before I get a Z270 or z370 mobo in maybe 3 months. My question is, will i7 7700K be compatible for asus H110m-a m.2? website says its supported, but is there any Bios update required? Can anyone teach me how? Any other things I need to do?

Thanks in advanced, cheers.

There is no reason to upgrade from a 6700 to 7700k unless you have a Z270 board and will overclock, and even then with the 8000 series out its not really worth while.

Don't buy a 7700k. Get a Z370 + 8600k instead

I'd say it's not worth the upgrade at all. If you're on that tight of a budget, save up for a while longer and get an 8th gen (or 9th gen by then) processor with a Z-series board (or get a Ryzen 2 CPU and board).

If you're hell-bent on upgrading a 6700 to a 7700k, you will almost certainly need to update your BIOS for compatibility. What are the rest of your system specs?

Look up a youtube video. The short of it is you'll need a formatted USB drive and you need to download the new BIOS, then you go into your BIOS, find the BIOS update/flash utility and follow the steps. But seriously, watch a few videos first. It is way too easy to completely kill a board if you don't know what you're doing.

I don't have the luxury for a Z370 + 8600K combo.. I'm getting 7700K since i have a really nice deal (almost half the normal price) and I did say i will get a Z270.. and i need to upgrade as much as i can as i use the pc for some drawings and 3d thingy for sideline work.

How much do you spend for that? I mean, both Z mobo and 7700k/6700k better be cheap to make it worth buying.

Just half is not enough. 7700k isnt all that much better than 8350k which allows easy upgrade to an 8600k/8700k in the future.

The thing is, I got a buyer for my current 6700 for a really nice price and I got a nice deal for a new 7700k which I only need to add like 20$ to the 6700 sell price.

My personal experience tells me the more times you upgrade, the more money you waste to get the same level of performance. If I were you, I'd do a big step each upgrade rather than small steps like 6700 to 7700k

Oh, and 9th gen could be quite far away. Intel has a lot of trouble in making 10nm process work. It also has to solve Meltdown and Spectre through hardware means, so more development time is needed.

Performance:

7700K = 6700K > (just by a little bit) 6700.

Not worth AT ALL.

You might as well be upgrading to another 6700.

ok, maybe i'll take your advise and just save up a bit longer for a z370 + 8th gen K cpu. anyway im just a casual gamer and my sideline work drawing/3d program is not so specs demanding (for now). Thanks a lot guys for helping me decide.

Ok So I decided to wait and save a bit for a z370i + i5 8600k. I have few new sets of questions that I need your help to answer:

1.       Can I just plug in the following and will work properly without any additional complicated settings and like nothing happened?

a)      Gpu (zotac gtx 1070 mini)

b)      2x 8gb ram ddr4 2133mhz

c)       240 gb SSD (installed OS windows 10)

d)      1TB HDD (for files)

2.       Will my 500W PSU enough (whether I overclock or not)

Thanks in advanced! Cheers!
