Are bigger monitors going to be a trend? When to expect 40-49 gaming monitors?

I am wondering this...
There are already some 43 monitors released by lg and Philips.
But they seem aimed more at professionals and desktop work.
I can understand that 24 to 27 can be ideal for competitive gaming like cs and pubg.
But not everyone is a competitive gamer.
I for one enjoy single player games and after playing a bit on PS4 in a large tv, I must admit a 27 inch screen feels way to small, and way to claustrophobic.
For me the immersion of a good story driven or action driven single player campaign on a 50 inch screen is great and I enjoy it way more than a smaller screen.

So I am asking if this might become a trend and when can we expect gaming monitors to start showing up in plus 40 sizes?

Nvidia demoed their big 55in or 65in gaming monitor at CES this year so I say in maybe a year or two

Just keeping this here as a Whether a screen feels big or not is relative to how far or close you sit from the screen. The ideal monitor distance, at least for "traditional" monitors, is about an arm's length. But I see people put their monitors increasingly further away. Larger screens then would make more sense, but at the same time I'm thinking "just bring your monitor closer."

When I talk about immersion from the TV, I mean that I game at a recliner I place straight in front of the TV to be close as I feel for gaming the couch is too far. 

OK to watch TV, but too far to game.

I think people want them but they won't be affordable to the mainstream for awhile.

 

Hell, a solid 27" 1440p 144hz monitor is still too expensive for the mainstream in my opinion. Prices are slowly coming down though, to the point where I could now afford one that's not a korean model shipped from ebay.

Well you have to look at it in the sense that you play PS4 on a large tv (50"+) about 3-5 metres away but your PC monitor is only about 1m away (or less in many setups).

I have a 27" and a 24" monitor and they are about 70-80cm away for my face which makes them feel quite large compared to the TV I have at home.
I know someone with a 32" and it actually feels like it negatively impacts gameplay when you have to move your head to see different parts of the screen. 
This ofcourse gets avoided by having the monitor further away from your eyes, but then you're just going back to the Monitor (1metre) vs TV (3-5metre) distance difference.

For PS4 you also gotta remember that your hands are perfectly stationary and this is perfect for a recliner.

Wouldn't quite work if you have to move around a mouse or type on a keyboard :)
As a very casual gamer, and depends what you play also, you could probably get away with playing a pc game on a recliner.

Never understood larger monitors. 
Less PPI, take up more room. Both in footprint and you have to be further away.
I have a fairly large desk and I could never go above 27"

I don't do content creation or productivity work of any sort. 

So ppi is less of a concern. 

I also agree on the price and bang for the buck. 

 

A 32 inch 1440p 144hz g-sync monitor costs more than 750 euros. 

A good Sony 49 inch hdr10 4k TV with nearest neighbor 1080p costs 580 due to frequent store sales on TVs.

 

OK the monitor has those bells and whistles, but do they really make a single player game like rise of the tomb Raider more enjoyable than seeing those scenarios and landscapes on an immersive 49 inch screen?

It certainly doesn't really do that when I play a game on a console on my 50" 4K TV and I'm pretty damn close to it (there's about three or four feet of space from my face to the screen).

Not necessarily. I feel some games play better on a big screen at a little bit of distance. I moved my pc to my living room to play Witcher 3 on the big screen. Butter smooth 60 fps, high res textures, with a gamepad, and ass in the couch is still a very enjoyable gaming experience. A PS4 could not deliver the graphic fidelity that I seek in most games.

i don't think it will be mainstream because monitors vs tv's are meant to be at a desk a foot or less in front of you, where a tv is meant to be viewed from a distance and can be bigger

Yes, but I find on online forums that there is a big interest on the new lg 43 inch monitor for example.

and over at hardforum there is a big thread about using Samsung 4k TVs as monitors.

i used to have a 27 inch screen at my desk. It was ok when I was gaming with mouse and keyboard because with that I sat up straight and really close to the monitor.

once I played a controller game, I usually sat back on the chair to have the controller not on top of the desk but on my lap and then I always wished the monitor could be closer.

and on my desk, that is 1,40m wide and 65cm deep, I think a 43 inch monitor would be perfect.

again, for gaming purposes, not productivity.

I'm finding my 32 16:9 144hz 1440p monitor absolutely spot on for desktop gaming.

It really suits Squad, as I can see stuff a bit earlier and further than my previous 27 1440p monitor.

For immersive games, like Escape From Tarkov it is also very, very nice.
