How many VM's can you have running inside each other (Without crashing)

 

Rules:

Each VM must be stable

You can use any program, (even multiple!)

Any OS

 

To enter your submission post a screenshot of your screen (With each VM open full screen in there own screen), And the number of how many you achieved!

(But it would be interesting if you posted how many Gigs of ram, What CPU & GPU you have and stuff)

I had this idea some time ago but never tried it out.

They are called Nested Virtual Machines, and, if the VMM is properly configured, are almost as efficient as running a single VM. 

Ostensibly, this is what Docker is doing with their kernel emulation in containers. They have to be very efficient at nested VMs otherwise the penalty hit (and cost of deploying to AWS) would be too high and no one would use their product.

A few years ago (you can see the date in the picture) I tried this. I was running a VM in a VM on my PC (2 in total). My PC had an Intel Celeron G530 2.4GHz and 8GB RAM. Host OS and first VM's OS is Windows 7 and the second VM is XP. Using VirtualBox on both.

Even back then I could technically run another VM in the XP VM, but that wasn't what I was trying to do. Now if I tried it, I may be able to run even more VMs, well untill I full up all of my 8GB RAM, but I don't have the time to do it today. If I remmeber and have time, I will do it tommorow.

Why not use a minimalistic OS like Tiny Core Linux

Even though I have to make a presentation for school, I decided to try and run more than 2 VMs. It's more interesting so why not.

The setup is basically the same except the CPU being used is an i5-2320 3GHz instead of the Celeron G530 from last time. I have kept all the files from then (3 years ago) so I had little work needed to set up a 3^rd VM. Unfortunately, after a few tries, I couldn't get it to boot. It got stuck when starting Windows XP as you can see in the picture.

So I managed to run 2 stable VMs, the 3^rd VM was unstable . Couldn't beat my own record, but atleast I tried . Maybe if I tried a different program for the 3rd VM I could get it to work, but I really have to get started making that presentation for school, been postponing it for almost 2 weeks.

Oh, and the Host PC's OS is Windows 7 but with a XP Zune theme. Just saying why it looks like XP.
