LGA 1156 CPU can only work in a LGA 1156 socket motherboard.

LGA 1151 CPU can only work in a LGA 1151 socket motherboard.

 

That and the pin mapping can/is different.

E.g. pin #1000 on LGA 1156 could be power, but pin #1000 on LGA 1151 can be DRAM Memory.

Also, expanding on what @-rascal- said above:

 

I believe that it's worth mentioning that while Skylake, Kaby Lake, and Coffee Lake all utilize the 1151 socket, the Coffee Lake CPU's MUST be in 3-series motherboards (Z370) while Skylake and Kaby Lake CPU's can be in either 1-series or 2-series motherboards (Z170, B150, H110, Z270, B250, etc.). The chipsets AND sockets ultimately determine what CPU's fit with what motherboards, it is no longer just one.
