Is this the right way to put on thermal paste?

DiabeticSeizures

I have no clue how to put on thermal paste. Is this the right way?

personally, I think there is no wrong way to put on thermal paste, please paste a PNG or a JPEG if you want people to see it.

Please don't argue with me, I am just trying to help, or be helped. (we are all humans right?)

There are some pretty wrong ways to go about doing it.

Emptying the whole tube into the socket for example.

(facepalm)  obviously within reason. I meant like a dot versus a grain of rice.

I would recommend doing it like this:

Spoiler

1- Get some thermal paste, either Artic Silver 5 or Thermal grizzly and some TIM cleaner, You could probably go with out, the TIM cleaner that is, it but it makes the job easier. Make sure you have an anti-static strap and your using it, its unlikely to matter anyway but better be safe then sorry.
2- Disassemble you computer, to the level where you can remove the cooler(So if you have a PC don’t take the whole thing part unless you have to) then remove the heatsink.Once you have taken the heat sink off, put some TIM remover onto some tissue, toilet paper will be fine, and gently wipe over the CPU/GPU/North bridge(Select as appropriate). until there is no paste left, not even a trace should be left. If the TIM isn’t coming off easily then you can put some directly onto the chip.
3- Wait 2-3 minutes, this lets the tim cleaner lifts what has been missed.
4- Wipe all the surfaces you have just cleaned with a material like your t-shirt, a first run of this stage could be done with some tissue then your t-shirt but it doesn’t really matter as long as it is gone.
5- Apply a line of thermal paste in a parallel line to the longest edge on the CPU/GPU/North bridge.
6- Spread it out most TIM kits include a spreader but you can always use some cling film over the end of your finger, I found the spreader easier but your milage may vary; you want a thin layer over the whole die, making sure that you can't see the die, if there is some on the socket latch (or on the green part,Mobile chips) then its not too important but some people may remove it, I personally don’t bother.
7- Place the heat sink down at a one or two degree angle and then turn it so that the mounting holes are all align, then wait a few minutes, this allows the air to escape.
8- Tighten the screws down in a star like pattern, make them all finger tight and then go around with a screw driver, the heatsink shouldn’t move at all.
9- Make sure that it is all tight and reassemble you computer.
Thermal paste doesn’t last long and should ideally be replaced yearly.

But the pea or rice method will do.

(Please use PNG or JPG not XML)

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

It's gonna thermal throttle, they didn't put enough paste on.

When they meant make sure its sandwiched, they didn't mean literally!!!

For desktop CPU's, I think it's hard to do too much paste. Yes, you don't want it to ooze all over the place, but I'd rather have a little bit more than not enough.

actually your better off using less.  its only there to fill the microgaps, less really is more.

anything less than a pea size is a bit not good

thats because anything less than that wont even cover the die.  you dont even need it to cover the entire cpu, just the die

You want to cover the IHS, not the die. The heat is already spread out.

actually not totally true.  the die is what gets hot, the ihs is there to spread the heat, but only the middle(generally where to die is) is actually important.  the edges of the ihs dont get hot and thus, you dont need paste there.  you only really need it over the die(obviously not on the die itself unless you're delidding)

too much thermal paste, even before it oozes out the sides, can just cause more thermal resistance.  less is more

I dunno. I've been doing it for 25+ years and never found much difference short of gobbing it on or putting way too little. There's a lot more room for error than people make it out to be. I've even managed lots of laptops with thermal paste where it's more critical to get full coverage since there is never an IHS.

Best recommendation is to apply liberally like in that gif. :D

cooling is best with the biggest surface contacted to the heatsink, so spread out that very tiny drop of paste in a super tiny layer all over the cpu surface covering most as posible, this can take a while depending how easy the pasta is.

You can use a creditcard or whatever to do this, or a plastic on a vinger, never touche the pasta or the cpu surface directly

as its poison and the surface of the cpu needs to be clean as posible (use alcohol to clean it first)
