Sharing files via Ethernet cable

Crunchy Dragon

I've heard of sharing files and other things between computers, but haven't actually been able to find a good tutorial on how to do it and if I need anything special other than two computers and a LAN cable.

Does anyone have any insight or advice they can give me?

Thanks!

I do this all the time w/ my 10G to 10G on my main PC and my media PC. It was just a matter of plugging in. If the cards are new enough they'll be able to crossover themselves and Windows will hand the rest. Just make sure to set IPs manually.

Edit: If that doesn't work, please don't ban me. I'm not an expert.

You can do it the router method or, like a FireWire method is what I call it.

How new do they have to be? My desktop is running an ASRock AB350 Pro4 and my laptop is Sandy Bridge-based.

MDIX has been around for quite a while, so you should be ok.

As a reminder, if it does not work, please do not ban.

Just use windows file sharing, it's simple enough, turn it on select the folders you want to share then click on the networked computer in the explorer window.

Like others have said, you can pretty much just plug both pcs into each other.

But since there is no DHCP server on a point to point link, you will need to configure a static address on each pc. For example, one pc can be 192.168.200.1 and the other can be 192.168.200.2. Just make sure they in the same subnet (basically keep both static ip addresses identical except from the last 3 digits). You can then go to the file/folder you want to share, right click, then go to the sharing tab. Click advanced sharing, check "Share this folder" and then go to permissions and enable full control for the Everyone user. See this screenshot:

You should then be able to go to pc #2 and in the address bar in windows explorer go to \\[pc#1'sipaddress] and your share should pop up.

My native language is C++

You should just click diagnose network... it will do a ip refresh and APIPA will handle the IP addressed for the machines
