Windows XP compatibility

Hello !
so, im buying a i7 920 + this motherboard  for really cheap.

and I was wondering. is this compatible with windows XP ?
what version should I pick ?

I want to run arcade game emulators and play old titles. 

is there some hardware I should avoid ? (say more than a specific ammount of ram, or a ram speed ?)

Windows XP will install but you might have issues getting drivers for stuff like Ethernet and sound. The version you should pick is whatever is available. Would just stick to 32-bit rather than the 64-bit version.

windows 10 will run just fine on that machine, and it's orders of magnitude better IMO (if you don't like 10, 7 will run just fine on that machine as well)

because I want to play XP-only titles
old games that are not supported by new hardware / OS

I want to play everything from pacman to quake 3 (and then some)

 

and I mean, im getting it for 36$ usd. so yeah.

Actually some of those games may run in Windows 10. I did install copies of Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 and 2 that I got from General Mills cereal boxes.

Just checked on Gigabyte's website and they do have Windows XP drivers for this board. You're all set.

Which GPU are you planning to use since the first generation Core iX didn't have any?

I have a P260 right here, but there are some gtx 550ti's for 30$ cad on kijiji.
I might go for that. but I don't think its nessesary.

I could SLI the p260 for 20$

 

but for real, SLI on 660ti's was bad enough. I don't want to go through hell again with the Nvidia CS...

At the place I used to work at, one of the machines there had an IVY BRIDGE i3 and was running XP.

 

Drivers can be found, it seems... Your first gen Core i series should support XP fine, its only one generation after the core 2 series, which were regularly released with XP.

You'll get generic drivers. Meaning the hardware will work, but depending on the hardware you may not get all features or full performance of the hardware. Generic driver a re drivers that follow a set standard in the industry. Like your graphics card for example, technically, without drivers and nothing, you'll never get an image on the screen until the drivers are installed. But you do have a minimum, hence get the BIOS, and later UEFI screen to show, and Windows will work, with poor performance, until you install the drivers (or Windows update does it for you).
