What was the reason behind the fact that Sony and Microsoft released more like an "updated" version of their consoles with the PS4 Pro and the X instead of waiting and making really "new" ones like a PS5?

Wouldn't it have been better or having more advantages? Just curious.

because they were already outdated, and we're nowhere near the usual refresh cycle yet?

 

at least, that would be my guess.

The PS4 Pro and XBox One X only exist because 4k TVs have gotten cheap the last year or so.

Id have to agree with @SteveGrabowski0 4K TV's have gotten a lot cheaper. Also, PC gamers have had 4K gaming for a while so they wanted to cash in on that. Plus VR is a thing, so thats another reason.

Because it was easy to do without breaking anything and the hardware for the next console wasn't available at the time.

That came out last year. 

 

And you can expect Sony and M$ to work with AMD for a Zen based next gen APU.
