E5-2650 or 2nd gen ryzen for server project?

hey all, ive been looking over parts, and considering options for a sever project im planning. i was originally planning on using the ryzen 1800X as it seems like a beastly 8 core, thought i was going to try holding out for zen 2 if i could. to that end i was exploring a different option, when i can across this reddit thread:

and a comment about xeons caught my eye, which lead me to this:]

so, my first question is, for a server i intend use as a handbreak machine, minecraft server, tonido/ file server would the xeon be a better option than the ryzen chip, despite being discontinued? as far as i see, their both 64 bit chip, w/ 8/16. the only difference being the the xeon uses DDR3, and is on the older 2011---which brings me to my next question..

 

because the E5-2650 is a 2011 socket chip, does that mean if i can get a consumer grade 2011 mobo, drop it in, through on a good cooler, and im good to go? or am i miss-informing myself?

the 1800x isnt a bad choice, to look at it from another perspective. the 1800x system will be faster due to higher clockspeed, however.

1800x setup with a good enough cooler and 16gb or ram will cost around 800 dollars

for a similar price you can get 64gb of ddr3 with a good enough cooler

 

youll have to look for whether or not the mobos support the xeon, most do.

im aware that a 1800x system will run faster because of a much higher clock speed, but in truth im not sure, yet, how much of a benefit a minecraft/ file server would get from that. (i dont know how clock speed affects the tonido personal cloud software, same goes for handbreak) truth be told though, DDR3 prices arent as bad as DDR4 currently, so that sort of makes the xeon more inviting.

well as said, for the same price as 16gb ddr4 you can get 64 gb of ddr3

handbrake will take a hit but the pros of the xeon setup outweigh the cons imo.

thats where my line of thinking was going as well. the xeon and the 1800 x have the same TDP on the spec sheet, but heaven knows if they would operate at the same temp for long, if at all.

 

say, other question, do you know what the chipset for the E-2650 is? i know the socket is 2011, but i have yet to research if X99/ 2011v3 would work with it. im about to go to sleep, so im out of time ATM.

x79 support e5-2650 / e5-26xx (v1, sandy bridge) and v2 (ivy bridge) and ddr3.

x99 support e5-26xx v2 & v3 and ddr4.

 

Some x79 motherboard supports registered ecc but not all.

reg ecc is very cheap right now. you can get 64gb ddr3 ecc for the price of regular 16gb ddr4.

 

If you want speed 1800x is the one, if you want bigger memory goes to 2650.

 

There is no new x79 motherboard coming from popular brand.

But some chinese brand released motherboard that have modern tech inside.

so, after more digging, i discovered that any mobo that supports the 2650 is ither out of my price range, or only supports DDR4. what i found next is this sabertooth x79

 it takes DDR3, so no selling the leg for DDR4

something i did just notice though, i was planning on a 4 HDD RAID for the 'file storage' part of this server. would this board be ok for a raid 0+1 config  (20 TB raw, 10 TB usablle)
