What's better for performance 17" 3k @120hz or 15" 1080p @120hz for gaming performance

Pachuca

hi,

I could use some advice here. I'm at a cross roads. I'm looking at 2 sager laptops. The 2 models is NP9877 with 17" 3k @ 120hz with gtx 1070 and i7 8700. The other one is NP8157 15" 1080p @ 120hz with gtx 1070 and i7 7820hk. Will the 3k diminish my gaming performance in the long run or it doesn't make a difference? the price point between the 2 for me is about $600 with the 15" being cheaper. I'm mainly concerned about performance and if anyone can quantify the difference between these to because I'm not sure if the $600 extra for the 17" is worth it.

What resolution are you calling 3k? cause 3k doesn't exist.

At an extra $600 though, i'd just get the 1080p version.

3k? what resolution are you talking about, 3840x2160? That would be 4k.

Anyway it will affect performance, and honestly on laptops I think the higher resolution isn't really worth it because a) you don't have the GPU horsepower to push it at 60 FPS (probably, depending on the game) let alone 120 FPS and b) it's 17", you're not going to run those resolutions natively. I'd save the $600 and go for the 1080p model.

I'm assuming 3K would be 3200x1800. There's not a single GPU in the world that could do 120fps in any current game, especially not in a laptop form factor.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

If you two bothered to google the product name of that laptop you'd find out that Sager seems to be calling a "2.5K" 1440p screen 3K.

Why would I google it lol, tbh i'd have thought it was the OP calling it 3k, not the manufacturer.

The fact that the manufacturer are calling it 3k.. well they're just stupid.

Thanks for all your input everyone. I really like the 17" because it has the new 8700, but I should be fine with the 7820hk and gtx 1070.

It's not worth it tbh.

If you really wanted to play 1440p though, you could go out and buy a decent 1440p monitor for about $200-300. Just hook the laptop up to in when you're at home xD

Or if you wanted the high refresh rate, this 144hz 1440p for $323 https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Xywqqs/aoc-ag241qx-238-2560x1440-144hz-monitor-ag241qx

I would rather have the higher refresh rate than resolution. I had a gaming laptop before which was overclocked to 75hz and that was ok at best. I play a lot of fps games so I notice the difference between my desktop 144hz and the laptop 75hz. thanks for your help.

Even at 1440p it's still not really worth it on a laptop imo, for the same arguments.
