hey

i would like to upgrade my server.

My current setup:

MB: amd am3+ | amd fx 4100 | 1TB 2,5 hdd | gtx 650 | 8gb Ram | 500W power supply

My electricity bill is so huge with this server. (150€ a year(28 cents a kilowatthour))

I would like a server with near the performance of this with much less power consumption.

It should run a file server webserver DNS proxy vpn

ty blvckripper

Join the Appleitionist cause! See spoiler below for answers to common questions that shouldn't be common!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

with what you are running on it you could first toss the GPU as you dont need it and then think if you really need any of that performance as you didnt list anything that would need any performance at all.

if power consumption is an issue you should check out synology where even the smallest two bay slow CPU models have more than enough power for what you need and only need a few watts.

The FX CPU needs a GPU. So a small investment is needed either way, and that FX will consume 125W max, which is insane for a chip that barely outperforms a Core 2 Duo, lol.

+1 for the Synology NAS. If it's basically just for file storage, any 2 or 4 bay model will do. My 215j is chugging along nicely for the file sharing and VPN access it provides.

its a server, you set it up once ands never connect any display to it ever again as everything is done over the network.

he could toss out the GPU without any problem.

Tossing this card out won't be a problem, but he will need something to let the board know it has a GPU installed. These FX systems without onboard graphics often don't POST if no GPU is detected, some won't even run headless. It's a matter of trial and error.

Um I'd do an X79 or X58 server personally or just a low end Ryzen depending on what you need more of multithread? Single thread? Ramdependent? Ect.
