Do the tech sponsors have an influence on your purchase power?

I was wondering who the sponsors were for this years winter olympics and if anyone will watch any of it and if so which sports?

I like to watch skiing and speed skating, bob sleigh/luge, and highlites of the jumping sports, freestyle skiing.

doesnt influence my purchases at all.

its sponsored. they get paid to say good things about it.  the bias is obvious

why would i trust that without doing my own research.

Sponsors affect your purgases whether you know it or not. Just flashing their name to your eyes makes you - at least - consider them, even if you do not choose them.

Sponsors are there mainly to build brand image (which affects long-term purchases anyway). They want to remind people of them, and associate their brand with that event.

For example, Red Bull is now often associated with high-risk sports. Why? Well, they put their name in front of every high-risk sport event. They never said "buy our drink".

Yep.

That's why people who say marketing doesn't affect them doesn't understand marketing.

If you're at the store picking out shampoo, and you see two different brands which costs and smells the same, you are far more likely to pick the one you have seen in ads over the brand that's completely unknown to you. You didn't buy that product because some ad told you the price and you went "that's a great price, I need to buy it". You bought it because it felt familiar and trustworthy to you.

Also, this forum is a great example of how influential sponsors can be. Just look at how often Tunnebear gets recommended despite being shit compared to some competitors like PIA.

Or Lynda despite the fact that you can find similar material for free on other websites.

Not really, the whole appeal is to research independently for what's the best to make that hard earned money really count.

Anybody who believes it doesn't influence them is deluding themselves at least a little bit. The subconscious influence of marketing is well established and has tons of supporting research behind it. That's precisely why modern advertising plays so much to established ways to build psychological association and rapport.

Even if you're not consciously aware of the influence and take steps to avoid bias, it's never avoidable completely.

The funny thing is that it happens in this very forum all the time.

That's one example. I mean, I don't have any experience with them or know whether they'r good or bad, but whenever someone mentions VPN  they immediately get tons of "Tunnelbear" responses, often from people who aren't users of Tunnelbear (or any other VPN for that matter).

You will also read the expression "no name <insert product type>", "renowned brands", etc. Many would argue that it's about reputation, not advertisement, but in my view they underestimate how much of that "reputation" is more a consequence of product placement than anything else.

If tunnel bear is shitty and crappy, why does Linus promote them?

Yeaaaa for those of us in the know, basic human characteristics, we know why.

Also your last paragraph, that is more about buzz. Companies talk about buzz about their product

the brand, the buzz
