Bottleneck?

Hi,

Now , Yesterday i sold my old R7 250 that i had paired with my Q6600 and it worked fine , but i needed a more powerful GPU. So i sold my R7 for 450KN (Aprox. 45~€) and decided to Buy an RX550 as its cheap and powerful enough for games I'll Play (GTA V , DiRT 3 , World od Tanks etc.) but im wondering since im pairing it with my Q6600 , will it create any bottleneck? Im going to pick up the new GPU today...

The processor will bottleneck the GPU no doubt. To give you an idea, a Core 2 Quad Q6600 & 9600GT paired together will both be running at about 90-99% and the RX550 is about 342% more powerful. Links to the GPU comparison and video of GTA 5 on the Q6600 with a 9600GT below.

Depending on the motherboard you can get a Xeon X5460 running in the same socket with an adapter for about 30 bucks. Big upgrade from those Q6600s.

Primary: i5 4670K @ 4.5 / 2 x GTX 980 / 32 GB DDR3 / 2 x 850 EVO / 12 TB RAID 10 / Windows 10 + Mac OS

Secondary: Xeon X5460 @ 3.8 / GTX 770 / 6 GB DDR2 / 1TB HDD / Windows 10 + Kubuntu

Laptop: Chromebook Pixel / i5 3427U / 4 GB DDR3 / 64GB SSD / Kubuntu

There will be no bottleneck. People run 680s and 770s on a Q6600 with no issues. I would suggest overclocking however if you have not already done so.

There will be a bottleneck. It does depend from game to game, and how much I am not sure.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.
It matters that you don't just give up.”

the cpu will  bottleneck the new gpu for sure..In case Ur on a tight budget Go for at least intel pentium dual core serie(no matter the generation, untill its above the 1st gen pentium) ,get a cheap motherboard that supports DDR3..  and get 8 gigs RAM  kit..Or other option  that u have is go for ryzen 3 1300 pretty strong processor for price + will give u an extra edge over future gpu upgrade.. and go for a motherboard that supports ryzen's socket with 8 gigs ram.. In case really tight on budget opting a used processor and ram is not a bad idea..just make sure the mother board is fully functional before buying an used one.. U Might even get a  usedcheap CPU,RAM,MOBO combo if u look deep in web..

additional info-Not only the cpu will bottleneck but  while using it in A LGA 775 Mobo ,u probbably are inserting the gpu in a pci express x 16 gen 1 port, meaning bottlenecking the gpu to almost half of its full speed...

and even the DDR2 ram will slow down the system a bit..

there will be a bottleneck, upgrade your cup to a xeon (the best for the socket) and it'll be fine. Or you could just upgrade to kabylake pentium g4560 or ryzen 3 1200 for a newer platform.

Used to be everywhere in LTT forums, had a break which lasted apparently 1 year LOL.

Gonna get up againnnn.

Wake me up if I sleep again like Oppy.

Overclocked it works fine tbh.

Still begs the question; If it had trouble with the 660 why get the 770?

Both were hand me downs from my main system.

If you overclock the q6600 to 3ghz with the tape mod you can pair it with a RX550 all day long.
