"3DMark01 Boost" bios setting - what does it do?

my mainboard is a gigabyte B85M-D3H and it has this setting in the bios that is puzzling me ever since i got the board

 

 

i always wondered what this setting does.

 

does it improve performance for single threaded applications? 

 

does enabling it have any negative side effect on newer applications? 

 

anyone has an idea ?

except that the turbo button was put there for backwards compatibility with programs that would otherwise run too fast

 

in its most early and primitive function it underclocked the CPU.

i have not tried 3Dmark 01 on that computer ever ... so i don't even know if this bios function actually does something ... thats why i am asking
