Kaby Lake R vs Coffee Lake

Ok, so these are both based on the 14++ nm process, both are architecturally identical to Skylake and regular Kaby Lake.  Both include identical designs to previous generations (Coffee Lake i3 is the same spec as Skylake i5, Kaby Lake R is the same as Skylake-H i7).  So why do they have different names, I'm struggling to figure this out and it's triggering my autism.  Is it just Intel's marketing intentionally trying to be confusing as usual?

Edit:  I know the products are targeted at different TDP ranges, but they've never segmented like this before.

Skylake X - X299 Ethusiast

Kabylake X - X299 Step up program

Skylake 6700k/Kaby Lake 7700k - same architecture, slightly better clocks on KB - Highend

Coffeelake - Shit, AMD caught us with out pants down, lets quickly release the product we should have released 3 generations ago, but instead milked more $$$ out of 4 core and 4c/8t CPU's

I know that, it just bothers me that they're exactly the same silicon, just with different power delivery. Jurrino got it right though, Kaby Lake R is still on 14nm+, not ++. I was asking precisely because your answer was not satisfactory because they've never used different names for mobile cores.

To put it simply...they're different generations of CPU. The architecture might be the same, but there are relevant improvements or differences in the newer chips to need a distinguishable branding.

  • 3 months later...

Kaby lake R like i7 8550u. The first quad core intel-U chip
Coffe lake H like i7 8750h. The first six core intel-H chip
Coffe lake U like i7 8669u. The piece of shit U version of coffee lake mobile chip series, (say an upgrade of kaby lake r)
All of them are 8th gen

Seems to be because of the "Oh shit AMD" rush.

And you must not have autism. Meltdowns are not particularly fun or funny. I know that the US president jokes about disabled people, but that doesn't mean the world doesn't expect common decency from other people.
