  • Buy later and cheap: MX500
    • Decent improvement over previous gen
  • Buy now and with a $40 premium instead: 860 Evo
    • Samsung SSDs tend to have better longevity, not to mention some of the best drives

And here I almost had this concluded...

Edit: @Oshino Shinobu @Jurrunio Do either of you think the 860 Evo might be worth the (Lesser than before) premium now?

Just roll a dice and buy the 860 evo if the odd number goes on top. Otherwise, get Crucial. That's how hard it is to make the decision.

I'm in a dilemma on what 1TB SSD to get. The form factor is m.2 and I have no need for NMVe based ones. The current possible drives I have found are:

  • WD Blue WDS100T2B0B ($299.41)
    • Note: This is the 2017 version
  • Samsung 850 EVO MZ-N5E1T0BW ($347.84)
    • Note: Seems to be suggested on the forum, but its the oldest choice on this list
    • Not sure if the premium is worth it, unless it is more reliable than the others
    • New, improved, and cheaper drive: 860 Evo
  • Crucial MX300 CT1050MX300SSD4 ($289.99)
    • Note: Also recommended often here
    • I know there is the MX500, but the m.2 version isn't out yet

Do you have another suggested drive (Remember m.2) and which one would you recommend? Or do you think I should wait for the MX500 m.2 release coming up later?

Edit: New contender!

depending on your use case if it was gaming the best one would be the one with the highest iops, if you are moving around large files go for the one with the highest sequential read writes

Main PC (The Silencer): CPU - i5 8400 | Cooler - Noctua ND-D15 | Motherboard - Asus tuf Z370 Plus Gaming | Memory - Team Dark 16GB DDR4 2400MHz | Graphics card - Nvidia 750 ti | Storage - Crucial MX500 500GB, WD Blue 2TB | Case - Fractal Design Define R6 | PSU - Evga Supernova 650W 80+ Platinum

MX300, because 850 evo isnt $50 better. WD can stay off since it's not as good.

I'd go with the MX300.

If you don't neeeed it now, then I'd just wait for the MX500. If it's priced the same as the non m.2, you should save a decent chunk of change and get a slight performance bump. SuperBiiz has the MX300 cheaper.

No idea I'm not American. Don't RMA's generally go through the company itself, not the retailer?

I have ten or so Samsung SSDs across my machines and never had one go wrong, but my most important data is stored on Crucial MX200s because Crucial generally has better error-correcting than Samsung.  That being said, I have those Crucials in RAID1 just in case one dies on me, which is a more likely scenario than with the Samsung drives.

Given the choices you presented, I'm leaning towards the Crucial.  Then again when I'd go to buy it and am at the counter in my electronics store I'd probably say "f***k it" and buy the Samsung instead.

No clue, I've never received a dead part or had anything die yet (Got super lucky all these years). I have done returns on Amazon with no hassle for non electronic stuff though.

Might want to double check on each of their warranties. Samsung has 5, while WD and Crucial has 3. But they also calculate based on usage. Majority of them SSD in the old days were very generous when you order their desktop upgrade kit. Those days are long gone...

Amazon is definitely the exception, not the rule when it comes to any form of returns :P

I'm 90% sure if you have an issue, you'll be dealing with Crucial, not SuperBiiz. It's very rare that a company handles an RMA because it's an unnecessary step; they'd have to have you ship it to them, then they ship it to Crucial, then back to them, then back to you. It makes much more sense for the customer to send it in to the manufacturer. DOA might be different.

Hey, just a heads up. Best Buy has the Refurbished 1TB Samsung 850 EVO for only $210. Refurb only comes with a 90-day warranty so keep that in mind but it's a good price.

I was leaping for joy, then realized that is was using the older 2.5in form factor (Teased levels rise). Thx for the deal though.

Just get the cheapest, the speed difference will be so small you won't be able to tell. What ssd you have matters a lot less than the fact that you have an ssd

I would go for the Crucial MX500 personally. A bit cheaper than the 850 Evo, and is a little faster too.
