G sync Really worth it, Or is free sync a viable ption

MrVonGrumble

Hi,

Well I am going to do a dual monitor setup and need some help.

I have 1080ti sli and just don't feel comfortable spending £1200 on two 144hz 1440p G Sync monitors when I could spent £800 on two 144hz 1440p monitors with Free Sync.

Also does Free Sync support 144hz with Nvidia GPU'S?

Just wanna ask if any people notice the difference when they are enabled. I thought the refresh rate matters more.

I have a 144hz now and have no stuttering but this panel is old and it doesn't have any of these technologies.

Here is the monitor with G Sync:

Here is the monitor with Free Sync:

FreeSync monitors will just behave as a normal non-FreeSync monitor if you use it with an NVIDIA GPU. You will still get 144 Hz but the FreeSync feature won't be available.

Oh Okay,

But is there a reason to get a G Sync Monitor? Over a non G Sync one?

Whats the hype about them?

Because I don't know if its a must?

Freesync monitors are cheaper than G Sync monitors. Although when using a Freesync monitor with your 1080ti SLI, you are not taking advantage of the technology. With G Sync you would decrease or as Nvidia said “completely” remove screen tearing. I have barely noticed the difference, but it is still a significant difference. Freesync monitors will still run at 144Hz with your graphics cards.

If you havent experienced it before, then you dont need it. Just like high refresh rate monitors, those who have never experienced one dont understand how good it is while those who did cant live without it.

Although G Sync monitors are pricy. I wouldn’t recommend buying them if you don’t care about a little scene tearing.

I have not noticed any screen tearing at 1080p haha :)

I know I am an idiot having 1080p monitor and have two 1080ti's that why I am going dual screens 1440p

Will I have tearing at 1440p?

I like the idea of having a G Sync one but my friend says he turned it off after a week and he has 1070 sli!

Also I have OCD and have to have the same monitor and it is not allowed to have red on it. haha

No if you have a good monitor and graphics card then you shouldn’t worry about screen tearing all the time.

Oh btw, multi screen could cause issues with SLI setups back when Pascal first launched. Not sure if that's solved yet though

Oh okay,

Apparently G Sync/ Free Sync only really comes into play when your frame rate dips.

Well not exactly, it is for the enthusiast and the people who have the money for it.

welll seeing as your running 2 1080 ti's and if i  had the money in  my hand then yes i would get the g-sync version, just coz i can.

Do you NEED it ? no.

Can people tell the difference ? Yes i can

I went from a 22 inch 1080p to an Acer Predator X34A and i could tell but thats more to do with running a single 1070 so in demanding games it would stuggle to hold 100fps but was super smooth thanks to the g-sync.

Question is Do you need the money or wanna go all out on the monitors which are amazing ones by the way......

No it does not its just eliminate screen tearing and gives u fluid gameplay thats all.

But yes it will gives u smoother gameplay when the frames dips compared to non variable sync monitor.

U have a 1080 ti in sli u shouldnt worry about framerate dips.

Just get 144hz monitor without g-sync.

U can use Fast-sync which help with screen tearing but u might experience micro stuttering at high framerate.

Not really because u can find free-sync monitor under $200

The problem is that G-sync is way more expensive and it will only be found on gaming monitor which already expensive.

  • 5 weeks later...

Hi guys,

Sorry been busy working. Had to do loads on the server at work. :(

I ended up buying a g sync monitor because i realised it was a better investment and a nicer experience. I see why everyone suggests them.

I got my dell 27" 1440p at a great price. I know I have two 1080 ti's but dont feel like 4k is worth it at this current time. (Will wait for a second monitor which will probably be 4k).

Yeah it was the better choice in honesty.

You may have tearing. If you're investing that much money into your experience, I'd get the g-sync option. If you're going for the best of the best PC, may as well try to get the most out of it, right? ;)

I have a single 1080ti, 8600k, and a single 1440p 144hz g-sync panel and I love it.

Yeah it was best to get the g sync panel after looking and testing a free sync monitor on 1070 sli.

I can tell the difference.
