i5 6400 vs ryzen 5 1600

Hi guys.

I really want to get a ryzen cpu, since my current one is pretty shit. Im currently using an i5 6400 (non k).

all I really do on my PC is play games and browse the internet, and occasionally make music and edit videos in sony vegas and after effects.

So,  i was wondering, is it REALLY worth upgrading my CPU? I also need to buy a new motherboard for it, too (duh).

Should I spend my money on a new graphics card? I use a 1060 6gb and was thinking of buying a 1070 or 1080 (not Ti)

thanks

Wait for the new ryzen cpus that are releasing in April, they will fix memory issues and have about 10% higher clocks to make them more competitive to intel.

It's so better. Get a Ryzen 5 now while it lasts. OC it with a B350 mobo get much better performance than your i5-6400. The 1060 6GB should still be fine in a couple of years.

P/S: Can u wait until Ryzen 2 launches in April?

Ryzen refresh will come in April so wait since this system is far from bad

Dont upgrade the graphics card. Prices are mad unless you go used (it's still inflated there)

What games do you play? Are they cpu intensive? Do you get stuttering because your cpu is maxing out? If so I would say go for it. I upgraded from a i5-4670k to a ryzen 5 1600 and my gaming experience is much smoother.

i was hoping to get the CPU and mobo (and yes the MOBO i was looking at has b350 chipset) as a birthday present / i'll be paying some of it too.

i just don;t want to upgrade for no reason.. like is it really going to improve my internet browsing experience and make gaming any better? i dont play heavy games, i play lol and overwatch usually.

If that’s all you do it won’t improve anything. I5 6th gen should be more than enough to handle that. I would look at other components that make you feel like it is sluggish.

Ram could be if it’s not 8gb

A gpu, a 1050 ti is a perfect budget card and is more than enough for those games

a ssd if you’re only using a hard drive solution

I'm using 16gb of ddr4 RAM, a 1060 6gb and use and SSD for my bootdrive.

Should i upgrade my GPU to a 1080? Or will my CPU bottleneck it?

You shouldn’t be experiencing issues with web browsing, and playing games like lol/overwatch

Can you describe more about what is bothering you

thanks

assuming you're only playing on 1080p 60-75 FPS it doesn't really make sense to get a 1070/1080

so yea, go for the CPU upgrade.

CPU bottlenecking shouldn't really be a problem, but if you feel like you need to, I would simply upgrade to something that uses the same chipset like a i5 6600 or i7 6700 so you don't also have to replace the mobo. I've got a 6600k right now and don't plan to upgrade it for a few years at least. And it's not worth upgrading your gpu unless you've got a better monitor to pair it with. A 1060 6Gb is plenty for 1080 60hz, but if you get a higher refresh rate monitor or higher resolution then you should upgrade your gpu

i use a 180hz monitor. and i think i might upgrade to another intel cpu so i dont have to buy another mobo.

Well In that case I would buy a unlocked intel processor and push the frequency

well this changes things ahahaha

if I were in your shoes I'd probably go for the GPU upgrade first, then CPU later if bottlenecking is an issue.

this gives you at least some time to wait for the next-gen CPUs ahaha

That's a good idea, what resolution is it? I currently have a 1440p 165hz display, and I am running a gtx 1070 and get between 60 and 80 fps on most games when they are set to are set to high.

If you plan on playing CPU intensive games (BF1, Assassin's creed origins, etc.) then you would benefit from the upgrade. If you stick to overwatch and lol then you are fine with your CPU.

I don’t know if someone mentioned this, but if you’re already on Skylake, why not forgo the cost of a total platform upgrade and grab a used i7-6700? That would be a pretty big bump over an i5-6400, and probably cheaper than switching to Ryzen as you wouldn’t have to get a new motherboard.

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

CPU: Intel i7 8700K @4.9 GHz/1.315v

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A

Overall the savings would probably be negligible because I would expect skylake and kaby lake to lose their performance fairly fast in a computing scene that is moving to more multicore scenarios than ever before, especially if he can't overclock. I would say a r5 2600 will be enough for longer, even if he has to spend like $80 extra on a mobo.
