Just need some help diagnosing why my new build is overheating so much. I have an 8700k running on a Asus ROG Strix Z370-E board, started with a Dark Rock Pro 3 cooler. With the included thermal paste I was sitting around 35-40C at idle, spikes of 90-95C and a constant of 80C under a stress test with Aida64. New Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste reapplied, didn't do anything to help temps. I chalked it up to the Dark Rock Pro 3 not being able to handle the CPU (which I didn't understand), and bought the new Corsair H150i. Installed that today, idle at 33-45C as we speak, with temps spiking up to 98C on Aida64 stress test. No overclock is on the chip, aggressive fan curve on both cooler setups, and I have a Cooler Master Haf X case with good air flow. With the H150i I used the pre-applied thermal paste and also redid with the Arctic Silver, no noticeable difference in temperature.

I do not. I can assure you that it's installed properly however, been building PC's for a good couple years. This is just my first go around with Coffee Lake, not sure if there is a BIOS option or something I am missing.

No, I wasn't doubting your installation method... I could see from your text that you tried several TIM materials also. Was thinking more of the airflow than anything.

I have the 200(maybe 220)mm fan in the front pulling in, a side fan over the GPU pulling in, 3 top fans on the rad pulling in, and a 140mm fan on the rear pushing out. It's a Haf X full tower, lots of air space. I'm also a freak when it comes to cable management, everything is clean.

Hmm, that is weird then... I would try different fan configs to see if you actually might have too much of a good thing there with intake fans maybe. I'd start with disabling the side fans and turning the rad fans into exhaust.

It should NOT be hitting that temp on stock settings IMO... even though I know they do get on the toasty side. Can't remember if that mobo is one of the ones that has the OC enabled by default - IIRC it was jay from jayz2cents that I saw that on first with the 8th gen mobos.. might want to look there just in case. What is your frequency currently?

I literally just found that vid looking through the forums. Gonna turn it off and see what happens, give me 10 mins. But yeah, these temps are stupid. All default frequency across RAM and CPU since I'm trying to figure out what the hell is going on with these temps.

You have too much pulling in and not enough exhaust. Try flip the top fans to exhaust and see if it helps.

Linus is my fetish.

Are you using default motherboard settings? By default, Multcore Enhancement is turned on and is an auto oc which will use higher core voltage than necessary.

Everything is default, turned Auto OC off. Idle around 33C, load 70-75C with Aida64. It's better, but with a 360mm AIO and no overclock I'm not very happy with how the chip is performing. I *really* don't want to delid but I may have to if I want to OC.

What's the core voltage at load?

Its known to be hot chip and another one of Intels to have issues with voltage control. Overall you shouldn't run any stress test with auto/adaptive voltages. If you do, its likely that voltages are higher than what is actually needed. I've seen these chips use 1.28V under normal load with default settings. Compared to older gen chips, thats what is used for OC clocks, stock would run with much lower volts.
