Hello all,

I have the opportunity to upgrade from my current I5 8600k to an I7 8700k for just $100. My buddy has an unopened 8700k he’s trying to sell (some money issues came up so he’s selling his parts he had been gathering) so he’s willing to take my 8600k plus $100 to him...is this a worthwhile upgrade? Currently, my 8600k is sitting comfy at 5.1Ghz.

do you wish that you had gone with the 8700k when building? If so then do it.  This all comes down to what the money vs payoff is to you.  From a simple value perspective it makes sense.

The only consideration to be had would be your overclock.  I know that my 7700k couldn't hit major clocks with HT on, with it off I was at 5.1-5.2.  Now my 7600k maybe hit's 5.0 but not overly stable.

If the overclock is your concern then you can always turn HT off to achieve a higher clock on the 8700k, with it's better silicone chance you can probably hit the same clock.  Clock isn't everything and a lower speed + HT could prove useful.  Still I would imagine your 8600k hit the silicone jackpot so you are risking getting a dud.

Audio go Brrrrrr

That’s a good point! I’m trying for 5.2 on my current chip. Right now it’s at a very stable 5.1 with a 1.310 VCore. This is mainly a gaming rig with some productivity mixed in such as office, working from home from a remote machine, etc.

For your use both will work fine. It comes down to what you get a kick out of.  Each cpu is a different flavor, i7 will give more threads and excel in some ways, i5 will game better so far as fps is concerned.  Honestly you don't Need the i7 and it might not clock as well.  It comes down to the itch in your pant's and if it's worth trying the silicone lottery again while being ready to take lower clocks for increased efficiency.
