The GTX 1070 is a Maserati, and the 8350 is your grandmother. The Maserati can do 185, but your grandmother is physically incapable of driving faster than 30.

My friend has an 8350 and a 950 and upgraded to a 1070 and noticed a significant bottleneck. It's probably best to get an R3 1200 for $100 or an i3 8100. If you get either one, there will also be an upgrade path.

If you are going to upgrade later (which I never reccommend but thats just me) buy the motherboard and a cheap CPU. Those 990FX motherboards are overpriced unless you can get decent for cheap.

Otherwise, a 8350 and a 1070 would be fine for 75-80fps at 1080p.

I disagree,  I currently am still using a 8350 and it runs great,  all depends on what your cooling it with,  also I wouldnt expect 75-80 fps in every game but it is capable of running just about anything you could want at 60 fps.  so saying no dont get it because its old is the wrong answer,  it will work and is a cheap place holder until you can get something newer and more powerfull.  its a matter of working with what you can afford

Probably a good B350 board and Ryzen 3 1200, or an H270 board (Z270 if you plan to overclock later) and a G4600.

Incorrect, his grandmother can do about 122MPH if she jumps off a really high building.

@brebis123The 8350 will limit the 1070's performance quite a bit. That said, for $50, it's not bad. I'd suggest looking for used Ryzen CPUs, pretty much anything Ryzen will be better than the 8350.

The 8350 is half the problem. The platform is the other. AM3+ is deader than Elvis, with no upgrade path (at least, not one that isn't nonsensical), and you're buying into DDR3 with the intent to upgrade to DDR4 later. i.e., you're purchasing more crap you'll have to sell down the line, and DDR4 isn't getting any cheaper. If this were the OP's end platform, sure, an 8350 with something like a 1050 Ti or 1060 3GB could work. The desire to upgrade to a DDR4 CPU makes this a terrible idea.

i3 8100 + cheap z370 + Hyper 212X, thinking on an i7 8700 down the line.

The i3 8100 actually suffices for a GTX 1070.

Now im just curious with what you have to say about a set up.  using the dated 8350 paired with a rx 480.  which part is holding the other back, the cpu bottle necking the gpu or the other way around ?

It's not a bad deal for $50 but if you can get a 1070, then you can get a better CPU + GPU today (like the i3 suggestion above that also gets you the upgrade path you want), just spend a bit less on the GPU and get a GTX 1060.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You would have to ask Joe Walsh.

Derp, for whatever reason, the existence of the B250 chipset slipped my mind entirely, Yeah, if overclocking is not the plan, B250 makes so much more sense than H270.

This past summer, on my way to see the eclipse actually, I stopped at Micro Center and picked up an 8350 and an AM3+ motherboard for $100 total. The intent was to build and sell with it later, but I threw together an experiment rig in the meantime, taking the GTX 1060 6GB from my i5-6500 rig and putting it in with the 8350.

When I tell you that the 8350 was the component holding that combination back, please believe me when I say I am being very, very honest. Eight cores don't matter if your IPC is on par with an abacus. Don't get me wrong, I love my Ryzen rig, and I could not be happier with its blend of performance and power consumption, and how cool the 1700 runs even under heavy overclocked load, but the FX series was like diarrhea. Just when you thought the turds couldn't get any worse, oh, wait, here comes the 8320E. Whooo-wee, there's a 9590, and now your shit's on fire!

Without question, the 8350 is holding back the combination.
