Is Seagate Barracuda 3TB Reliable?

I just got a seagate Barracuda 3TB, and i'm looking on the internet, and it doesn't seem to have a good reputation at all.
Starting with
https://www.newegg.com/global/mx/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178994
to even videos and coments everywhere (FB, youtube, etc) saying that seagate is shit.
I really don't know if i should return the hardrive to the shop and get a refund, or just keep it and see what happends.

Lets see...

I've owned 2 Seagates, both are dead. One 300GB (I think), the other 1TB. I think i still have both, one lasted a year the other 8 months. (when one died it felt like you could cook an egg on it)

In past posts about WD/Toshiba/HGST:

I've also stated my disgust towards the new WD Blues being that they are green with a new label (5400 ones, not the 7200)

I've had all Greens cause some sort of issue, my 3TB being the worst.

I've had 1 DOA from Hitachi, and one finally died nearly 10 years old.

According to HD Sentinel my 500GB HGST has lost 10% of it's life in one year but shows 100% for all others (7 others in total)

I'm apparently using a 2TB green which would explain the issues I've had with it (it's been in a enclosure for about 2 years), It's been out of warranty since 01/20/2015.

Greens are great drives, just the parking destroys them.

Try for Red Pro, at least here in canada it's now cheaper than the black by a few bucks. Or play Russian Roulette and shuck a drive from a WD external ones if cheaper (has to be 3.5 drives), you could get lucky and get a $300 drive for $200 or less.

So in pccomponentes.com (Spain's main PC component online retailer) a WD Red 2TB goes for about 200€, so I can work with that. It's 2 TBs less, but I guess that's better from losing all of my data 5 months after buying it, right?

If you care about 7200 i guess if you dont care about disk speed the non-pro ones are good too.

This one is under 200, or am i missing something?

I have a bad experience with SEAGATE Drives recently my 250GB Seagate is failing without any reason because the day before that it work just fine but now it has scratching noise when its reading or writing and when it power up it spins too long at first and emit a really long buzzing like noise.

The same thing happen with my old seagate drives too in the past while my WD and Hitachi drives is still work after 3+ years

Seagate are fine, but there seems to be a big disparity in 3TB drive failures compared to other capacities, regardless of brand.

There was a time when Seagte had major issues with drive failures and has tarnished their reputation a bit. but they have been pretty reliable (for me at least) lately. i would just avoid any 3TB drives.

True, it becomes which is cheaper for the speed of arrival.

Also i found a 3rd dead Hitachi (forgot my IDE died when i posted the above) and found my 320GB (stated as 300 above), however its only a 80GB and lasted about 7 years from a Lenovo.

The one that died not too long ago has apparently only 342.5 days on, and has 14 days to live :D tho its performance is at 100%... Drive good, discs bad.

In comparison after the 3TB incident I actually have a green with 13.5 days on, Drives nearly 5 years old.

The Seagate ST3000DM001 is notorious indeed.  I installed several of those in people's PCs back in 2011-2012, all of them were dead by 2015.  If I were you, I would make sure you have backups of everything you put on that drive.

I have a 3TB Barracuda. I have only had one problem with it, and that's not it's fault. My SATA to USB adapter doesn't support drives more than 2TB it seems. The drive has been very reliable, and I've used it a fair bit. Here's the current SMART data on it to show how much it's run:5a46c48f7b2fd_Screenshotat2017-12-2917-40-32.png.0b92b4ecc92ace1706a59ff239a4868c.png

I have one as it was really cheap at the time. It's still alive, but I only use it as a quasi-backup at the moment.

Brand-wise, I'd anecdotally go with WD before Seagate, but ultimately the chances that you get one that fails is fairly slim. As always, having a backup protects against any hardware issues you might encounter in terms of hard drives.

Okay to sum it up, 2 TB? okay good, 3 TB? Bad Avoid

its just 3 TB Drives have far more failure rate than  2 TB Drives but then again you can a bad 2 TB Drive and it can die in a week.

I recently myself purchased a seagate 2 TB 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache drive and a toshiba 2 TB 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache drive. they are not yet installed but i have ran some initial tests for 24 hrs, and they both looked good with no damage or errors and worked fine during the testing.. lets see how they fair when i have other parts for my PC.

Microsoft in there infinite wisdom have decided to impose a VRAM cap for games the that use DX9 o.O. May God Bless them those whoever came up with that idea.

I'm sure your Seagate is saying something like this:

The drive in question is approaching 5 years, in fact back in 2013 I did a couple 2TB purchases over a few weeks because NCIX had a good sale on them.

The newest drive I have with logical hours (not new) is the the HGST which is less than a year with 5630 hours on it. Drives G/V both accumulate the same hours as the HGST all others are random as hotswaps.

To be fair the HGST is a laptop 2.5" strapped/logged in to the back of my computer case as a quick fix that turned long term xD So if it dies at a young age I'll take the blame for it.

Don't put important stuff on the Seagate and you'll be fine (store your porn there) ;) Thank me later, which depending on how gentle you are to it might be awhile...
