GTX 780 upgrade to GTX 1070 or 1080?

Animator_Alex

I'm planning to upgrade this week and I was wondering which would be better for 1080P 60Hz. I'm looking to run all games at Ultra 60FPS. I'm leaning towards the 1070 but I wanted to have your opinion.

1070. Ultra isn't really as necessary as you might think, the difference is small for the hit on performance.

Both would be extremely OP for 1080p 60Hz. Even a 1050ti would be fine for it. I would go with a 1070 because it is cheaper and there would be no noticeable difference between a 1070 and 1080 at your resolution.

You are on a need to know basis, and you don't need to know.

If you're looking to save money I think a 1070 would be perfect.  I went from a 780 to 1080 but I also have a 144hz monitor (1080p) and wanted to pump out a few extra frames.

I say neither. Get a 1070 Ti. GTX 1070 seems to sell for around $410 while the 20-25% faster GTX 1080 sells for around $510, but newegg has a Gigabyte GTX 1070 Ti on backorder for $450. That's a GTX 1080 minus 5% for a price closer to the 1070.

How long do you need to keep settings at ultra? If you want to keep ultra then throw the card out when you need to drop to high in some games then you need a 1080ti then upgrade next year. A GTX 1080 can't do Ghost Recon Wildlands ultra 1080p at a solid 60fps. It isn't fast enough. However if you drop settings to high, you can get a 1070 and use it for upwards of three years. Ultra settings usually cuts performance nearly in half with barely noticeable graphical improvements.

Edit: Just to expand on this I went from a 780ti to a 1080, and my super not scientific anecdotal experience is that the 1080 is about 80% faster than my 780ti. You'll see a similar jump from the 780 to the 1070. The 1080 is about double the performance of a 780. Decide which is worth it for you and your budget.

I posted it rather quickly so I probably didn't get my thought out correctly.

Want to save money? Get 1070

Willing to spend a bit more? Get a 1080.

At the time I probably only spent an extra $100 going with 1080 over 1070, and only $50 than a 1070ti.
